On the final day of the summer transfer window, Manchester City saved the best for last. According to Duncan Castles of Sports Illustrated, the 2012 Premier League champions landed star midfielder Javi Garcia from Benfica.
"Benfica have agreed to sell Javi Garcia to Manchester City for €20m plus €3m in variables. #MCFC #SLB sulia.com/my_thoughts/67…

Per Castles, the deal could cost Manchester City €23 million in total. This deal all but solidifies City's standing as one of the teams—if not the team—to beat this Premier League season.
At 25 years old, Garcia has established himself as one of the top defensive midfielders in the world. His versatility and occasional offensive prowess make him an incredibly valuable asset to have.
Plus, this is an excellent counter move for City after Robin van Persie went to rival Manchester United for £24 million two weeks ago and Eden Hazard was scooped up by Chelsea for £32 million.
The difference in Garcia going to City, in comparison to Van Persie going to United, is age. Garcia cost City slightly less than what Van Persie cost United, but Garcia is four years younger and will be able to hold his value a lot longer.
Van Persie does have a lot more flash to his game as a striker who can score a lot of goals, which appeals to casual fans. However, Garcia's ability to keep players like Van Persie in check is just as valuable.
Plus, the fact that City was able to get him for less than the £24 million Benfica was asking for makes this a spectacular deal and adds even more drama to the Premier League season.
