NFL Quarterbacks the True Importance

Evan BaileyFeb 28, 2009

The quarterback is the most important player on the field.

That is a simple point. To argue the fact that you can win without a good QB is crazy.

I will grant the fact that if you had the best line, best backs, and the best wideouts, you could win. But with a great quarterback, you can win without incredible wide receivers.

Look at San Diego. Phillip Rivers—throwing to guys like Chris Chambers and Vincent Jackson—is still winning.

Take away Drew Brees from the Saints this year, and they would have joined the Lions at the bottom. Take away Peyton Manning and do you think a guy like Jim Sorgi could bring that success?

Look at the Dolphins: 1-15, then 11-5 mainly because of Chad Pennington.

You could say the Patriots are an argument against me, but look who leads the offense. Matt Cassel is a great quarterback. It looks like he will be as good as Tom Brady.

Look at the Detroit Lions: a team with some offensive talent, two good backs, and—at the beginning of the year—Calvin Johnson and Roy Williams at wide receiver. They just didn't have a QB to lead the team.

I am not saying it is all the QB, but I would give them 75 percent of the credit or blame.

When you think about it that is not a crazy statement. You think the Lions would have been 0-16 with Peyton Manning behind the center?

I don't think so—more like 10-6 to 13-3.

Also to say that guys like Joe Montana, Dan Marino, and Steve Young are overrated is just plain crazy.

You could say Brady wouldn't have broken those records without Randy Moss. That could be true, but remember, he threw only 23 touchdowns to Moss and 27 to Welker, Stallworth, Caldwell, and others.

I have to say that some QBs are overrated, but any QB that plays in the NFL is a phenomenal athlete and to take credit away from them is foolish.
