Paul Heyman's Impact on the WWE as One of the Best Talkers in the Business Today
He’s so good.
Paul Heyman, one of the most controversial figures that the business has ever seen, with all of his years as a promoter, with all of his work as head writer of SmackDown, at the end of the day is essentially just a regular guy who cuts great promos.
And he is scary good at it.

Every time he’s on TV, he makes an impact. Every time he speaks, it garners immediate attention from fans. And every time he smiles, it’s as if he knows that all eyes are on him.
And he’s pretty happy about it.
Heyman exudes confidence, so much so that when you look into his eyes, you get the sense that he’s not faking it. He is totally in character and has always had the ability to draw you in, despite who or what he is talking about.
This is especially true in the case of Brock Lesnar, whose return to WWE was one of the biggest stories of the year thus far. The hype surrounding him and the media publicity that followed him made for some big moments in the WWE, including his match with Triple H at SummerSlam.
Depending on which side you’re on, you are either very happy with what you saw from these two guys on Sunday night, or you’re fairly disappointed.
Some opinions out there seem to favor the former, with fans believing that the match went exactly the way it should have. It was a tough, hard-nosed battle which saw Brock controlling much of the tempo throughout.
For the supporters of the match, everything went just fine, better than expected, and the ending was exactly what the situation called for.
Other views, however, maintain that it was not the nail-biting, intense drama that Brock Lesnar versus John Cena was and in many ways was a letdown. Triple H took the heat for the majority of the match, much like Cena had, only the Game lost, whereas Cena won.
I for one happen to think that the match went pretty well. The story was told, and for all intents and purposes, it ended in the ring that night.
But despite what your take on the bout is, the fact remains that one guy helped sell it to the masses, both before Sunday night and after.
Just as we all knew he would.
From the moment that Lesnar returned, the demand for Paul began.
Brock, for all his strength, ability and star power, has never been quite the promo powerhouse that other top guys in WWE have been. His lack of charismatic mic skills were evident right away when matched against Cena, who has been doing the dance for a long time now and has held his own verbally against nearly everyone he’s faced.
So Brock’s need for help on this front became very apparent, very quickly.
But the desire the fans to see Heyman back in the WWE fold stemmed not only from the piece that was missing from Brock, but from the fact that they knew he would bring everything he had.
And, he did not disappoint.
Brock’s rivalry with Triple H brought some real unforgettable promos thanks to Heyman, who seemed to be enjoying himself with each passing week.
Cocky, arrogant and as self-righteous as always, Heyman may have given that infamous smile of his, but underneath lay the worst of intentions. His apparent handling of Brock, unmercifully unleashing him on an unsuspecting Triple H, gave him bragging rights, some vindication perhaps, against pro wrestling’s No. 1 family.
Heyman’s reputation as the industry’s top rebel was well established once again, as he defiantly led the Next Big Thing on a path of destruction that cut to the very heart of the WWE.
And that heart was Triple H, the man who, along with Undertaker, represents the old guard, the made man, the focus of a company that has long since put all others out of business.
Including ECW, perhaps?
Heyman’s thirst for revenge and for domination in the McMahon brand, thanks to Brock, has arguably never been more fulfilled than it is right now. And it’s we as fans who are reaping the benefits.
Why?
Because he is so good at what he does. Paul Heyman represents the most basic element of pro wrestling drama in its purest form. He brings emotion and logic to everything he says, and he dares you to somehow find a way to disagree with him or challenge him on any of his points.
The bottom line? It’s impossible.
Therein lies the beauty of it, and why he continues to be one of the best talents on the mic in the business today. Paul Heyman is truly one of a kind.
Nothing controversial about that.
