Tottenham Transfers: The (Potentially) Good, Bad and the Marouane Chamakh
With just over 10 days to go in the summer transfer window, Tottenham fans should be prepared for the club to be linked with everyone under the sun.
Monday night and Tuesday morning saw the beginnings of what should be a frantic rush to the transfer deadline, and Spurs were at the center of several interesting transfer rumors.
What makes the world go round at this point in the summer is not only the “in” column, but those that get slapped in the “out” inches as well.

For Tottenham, two players joined the Luka Modric outbound express that might have surprised a few people.
Michael Dawson looks to be the third wheel of the soon to be minted Jan Vertonghen/Younes Kaboul partnership, and such a fall from the backline apparently is enough to be sent packing.
The Guardian moot that Dawson’s pace is the reason for his fall from grace, to the point where even William Gallas is preferred to the England defender for reasons that, honestly, completely elude me.
Update: 6:42 PM ET: Bassong has apparently already agreed terms for a move to Norwich City, passed the medical, et al. according to ESPN Soccernet. Fee to be more than likely deduced soon.
Picking up Spurs’ vice-captain, however, seems a bit more appealing to the Hoops, according to the Daily Mail at least.
The heart of the same article on Dawson, however, was actually about Tom Huddlestone and a potential loan switch.
Also apparently too slow to be a contender for any reasonable starting spot in Spurs’ lineup, Stoke are already interested within the same article.
It’s probably not the way Huddlestone envisioned coming back from an ankle injury this past season.
With a midfield that’s currently in limbo, Huddlestone not making the grade from Andre Villas-Boas’ point of view must be a bit harsh on the 25-year old.
But not being able to tackle like either of Sandro, Scott Parker or Jake Livermore has its drawbacks, and his passing skills apparently are not enough to make up the difference.
Considering, of course, that Huddlestone is well behind in the defensive spot in Tottenham’s midfield, it therefore might come as a surprise to some who Spurs have been linked to coming in.
The Mail, amongst others, think that Nir Biton, a 20-year old Israeli deep midfielder, might be snapped up by the club with Manchester City and a host of others too slow to make an offer to his club, FC Ashdod.
Biton was apparently well liked by City, Everton and Aston Villa, but Tottenham were willing to make a permanent move where the others would not.
Perhaps more to the fans liking is the idea presented by the Evening Standard to pinch Roma’s Miralem Pjanic.
Only moved on last summer from Lyon, Pjanic might be a very shrewd move by the club, as he is performs exactly the role that Tottenham needs filled—the creativle role in a 4-3-3 midfield trio.
And with Roma completely out of Europe altogether, it might be worth trying to tempt them to part with potentially the player that could plug Spurs’ most glaring hole.
Then, of course, there is the smattering of rumors concerning forwards.
Yesterday frightened many fans when Marouane Chamakh was proposed as a potential Spurs target—one that was shot down with harrowing and fortunate speed—while Emmanuel Adebayor is still being waited upon.
(The audible gasps in some corners and potential trauma victims are still flooding into London hospitals as we speak.)
Meanwhile, the Mirror makes the annual “Andy Carroll still interests Tottenham” blip in stating that the Geordie’s future is more of a toss-up than a week-old egg salad sandwich.
That brings about the Daily Star, who devoted some web space to the idea that Villas-Boas has an interest in Saint-Etienne's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, as does Southampton.
Covered briefly in a view of Ligue 1 players who would benefit Tottenham, Aubameyang is similar in style to Adebayor, if a bit more direct at times and is willing to get on the end of crosses with his head.
Certainly, there will be busier forward speculation days in the future, but of the above mentioned, Pjanic really is something that one would hope comes to fruition.
While Aubameyang is another that grabs the attention, Pjanic could completely alter Tottenham’s approach to the market instantly.
Spurs are currently in flux as a squad. With Defoe playing the leading role, the White Hart Lane outfit do not have a player that is going to be on the end of crosses with any regularity.
At the same time, they are not getting the ball to Defoe’s feet with the passing options from midfield.
Acquiring Pjanic would ease the search for multiple striking options, as the club would have an excellent passer of the ball from midfield to complement a destroyer like Sandro.
Even then, with 10 days still to run, one would expect maybe a name or two more to pop up in the coming days.
Let’s hope that at least a few of those days end with happy thoughts, not Chamakh ones.
