If Cena Sucks, What Makes a Good Wrestler?

Daris BrownFeb 26, 2009

No matter where John Cena goes, he is hoarded by screaming kids and throwback wearing adults.

But regardless of how many people chant his name, there is the same number or more screaming that Cena sucks.

Cena is the No. 1 merchandise seller for the WWE, as almost every kid has a spinning belt, chain, or tee that screams, "You can't see me."

Yet, he still sucks.

But Cena is not the first to have this problem. This has also been the claim to fame for a man whose name goes hand in hand with pro wrestling, Hulk Hogan.

For every fan that you have that are die hard Hulkamaniacs, you have one or two Ric Flair or Lou Thez fans who would protest that Hogan sucks.

But why?

These guys sell millions of dollars in merchandise. They are solid on the microphone and they can hold the audience in their palms as they work a match.

But Hogan and Cena are still considered bad wrestlers?

Why? Because you can count their move list on one hand. Bologna.

Who does not know that HBK will deliver an atomic drop, a fist, a body slam and then an elbow from the top? He has the same moves, in the same order. Yet he is Mr. Wrestlemania.

Bret Hart throws a drop kick, an atomic drop, a stomp to the mid-section, an elbow from the middle rope, and a sharpshooter. Yet he is the best there is, was and ever will be?

So if a guy can work the microphone, have the crowd yelling, "You can't see me" in the middle of the match on cue, and put butts in the seats, isn't he a good, maybe even great, pro wrestler?

Like I said on "Hit the Ropes" Radio during my discussion with Demetrus and Shane, this is not boxing, MMA, or football.

Pro wrestling is much more complicated than putting together 100 moves. If so Dean Malenko, man of a 1,000 holds, would be the greatest-of-all-time.

But even in amature wrestling they teach you to only master four or five holds and just be an expert at them to defeat your opponent. Anything more than that is excessive.

So as much as I could care less about both Cena and Hogan, you have to give credit where credit is due. They are some of the best, if not the best, pro wrestlers of all time.

Think different? What do you think makes a great pro wrestler?

To find out more, listen in to Hit the Ropes Radio. This week's special guests: Former WWE Tough Enough Winner Daniel Puder and Gustavo Mendoza of Booker T's PWA.
