Washington Redskins Free Agency: 3 O-Linemen 'Skins Should Add During Preseason

James DudkoJun 7, 2018

The Washington Redskins' offensive line was like a revolving door against the Chicago Bears defense in Week 2 of the preseason.

It's not a problem that comes as a major surprise and the Redskins should consider scouring the free-agent market for some veteran O-linemen who can help solidify the suspect unit.

Here are the three best options Mike Shanahan and Bruce Allen could add to a line that has problems at every area.

Chad Clifton, OT

Chad Clifton is a scrappy veteran who still has a lot left to offer for the right team. The Redskins could certainly use a skilled and tenacious pass-blocker, like the 36-year-old former Super Bowl winner.

He has had his injury issues, missing 14 games in the last three seasons. However, he did make 16 starts in 2010 and helped solidify the Green Bay Packers' line on their way to the Super Bowl.

Despite his age and durability concerns, Clifton is still savvy enough to be a useful swing tackle for the Redskins.

Jake Scott, C/G

The interior of the line is just as big a concern as the Redskins' issues out on the edges. 31-year-old Jake Scott is a solid and savvy blocker who could help. He is able to play both center and guard.

Current center Will Montgomery is technically skilled, but is too often overpowered in the pits. Left guard Kory Lichtensteiger is the key man, but his durability record is poor.

Scott has started every game for the Tennessee Titans during the past seven seasons. He is strong at the point of attack and also operates well in space.

With injury concerns and unproven youth along the middle, the Redskins would be wise to add a smart pivot man like Scott to improve competition.

Kareem McKenzie, OT

Even though his form suffered in 2011, it's still surprising nobody has taken a chance on two-time Super Bowl-winner Kareem McKenzie. However, after watching Polumbus undermine the offense on Saturday and knowing how much Brown has struggled, the Redskins should consider giving McKenzie a chance.

Yes, he's 33 and veteran and experience have almost become dirty words during the Shanahan era. However, McKenzie is a smart and durable blocker, having missed only four starts during the last five seasons. The former New York Giant also offers excellent knowledge of NFC East opposition.

Like McNeill, McKenzie could work as a swing tackle providing quality cover on either side. As a starter, the 6'6", 330-pounder would give the Redskins a powerful presence over at that problematic right tackle spot.

Conclusion

The Redskins have added some youngsters via the draft, but the starting line is likely to be the same as the one that was shaky during much of 2011. Bringing in some quality veteran help to compete during preseason would be a good way to encourage better performances and might even produce a late-market steal for the Redskins.
