Condoleezza Rice Among First Women Members Accepted by Augusta National
Former United States Secretary of State and avid sports fan Condoleezza Rice is a part of history, as she and Darla Moore are the first female members of the Augusta National Golf Club.
Rice and Moore will don green jackets in October, according to Doug Ferguson of the Associated Press:
"The home of the Masters, under increasing criticism the last decade because of its all-male membership, invited former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and South Carolina financier Darla Moore to become the first women in green jackets when the club opens for a new season in October.
Both women accepted.
"
This is a monumental step for Augusta National, which, as the article states, has been behind the eight-ball when it comes to allowing female members. The club has been around for 80 years, with Rice and Moore being the first to break this barrier.
Women have been allowed to play at Augusta, as long as they were guests of already-admitted members. But for the club to finally take this step is huge.
Of course, some would say it has been a long time coming.
As Ferguson's article points out, there have been some movements in the past—namely, Martha Burk in 2003—to get Augusta National to open its doors to females.
It may have taken a lot longer than some people would have liked, but Rice and Moore have done something truly historic, and it will be a huge moment in October when they don those green jackets for the first time.
