Barcelona Transfer News: Alex Song Would Improve Team's Title Chances

After finishing second in La Liga last season, Barcelona is looking to acquire Alex Song from Arsenal in hopes of returning to the top of the league.

ESPN UK reports Barcelona is close to adding Song to its team. There is mutual interest between the team and player, but the price for the transfer has yet to be determined.

Barcelona vice president Josep Maria has been trying to negotiate for a low price, but he will probably need to improve his offer. The expected price for the transfer is in the £18 to £19 million range. 

Real Madrid won last year's title, but Barca is looking to get back on top. After finishing first from 2008 to 2011, the team will be in great position to be champions again with the addition of Song.

The team is already good enough to compete for in La Liga, but Song would give the team depth. 

There is no guarantee that Song would start for Barca, but he can come into a game and make a difference. He is capable of playing midfield and defense, so his versatility makes him an attractive asset.

Song is not much of a scorer, but the team does not need him to be one. Lionel Messi and David Villa will lead the attack. Song has the ability to set others up, but his value comes on defense.

He is a physical player who can keep opponents from having a consistent offense. The 24-year-old is a good player and his addition will help Barca regain the top spot in La Liga.

The transfer price is the only thing holding this deal up, and Barcelona needs to figure out how much they are willing to spend. The asking price could end up being too high, but the club should do what is best for the team.

For a reasonable price, Song would be a great addition for a team looking to overtake Real Madrid.

Song's physical style of play will be hard to pass up, and Barcelona will be better off if they can strike a deal for the midfielder.
