Kendall Fuller: Top 8 Reasons 5-Star CB Committed to Virginia Tech

Edwin WeathersbyAug 16, 2012

National Signing Day used to be the main event for recruiting and announcements on decisions by recruits. The past several recruiting cycles we have started buck a new trend due to recruits choosing to commit earlier and earlier.

For this 2013, over 75 percent of the top players have already made up their minds and are committed.

One of the latest elite prospects to commit is CB prospect Kendall Fuller of Olney, Md. A 5'11", 190-pounder with terrific athleticism and instincts, Fuller pledged to Virginia Tech a few weeks ago and is locked and loaded to be a Hokie.

Today, we're going to give you the eight reasons Fuller chose to play Beamer Ball.

8. Thursday Night ESPN Games

1 of 8

The Hokies seem to always have several Thursday night ESPN home games through the season, and they really have made the experience into a tradition.

Blacksburg gets really lathered up for Thursday night home games in the fall and the atmosphere is electric. Fuller, who has family members on the team, surely knows this, and it had to have a plus for Virginia Tech in recruiting him.

7. Consistency of the Program

Virginia Tech is a model for consistency in college football. Pretty much year in and year out, the Hokies are going to win about 10 games, contend for the ACC title and lurk around the BCS bowl games.

This is a stable, steady and consistent program that you can depend on whether you are a coach, player, fan or cover the team. We all want stability and consistency, and I would imagine you can include Kendall Fuller in wanting that too.

6. Bud Foster and the Hokies' Defensive Scheme

3 of 8

Foster is one of best assistant coaches in the country and a great defensive mind. He has been at Va. Tech since 1987 and has been the defensive chief since 1995.

A former Rover-type defender himself, Foster has a complex scheme that he runs in Blacksburg that is said to make players think quickly. The system has NFL principles all over it and prepares Hokie defenders well for the pros.

Fuller told Scout.com that Foster and the scheme are prime allures in his decision.

5. Proximity to Home

4 of 8

Fuller plays for Our Lady Good Counsel in Olney which is right outside Washington, D.C and not far from Baltimore either. The Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg is about a five-hour drive away, so Fuller won't be overly far from home.

He'll still be in the same region, in the same time zone and at a school that he is familiar with.

Distance may not have been a factor in Fuller's recruitment, but Va. Tech being relatively close still had to have been a plus.

4. Frank Beamer

5 of 8

Beamer has been the head coach at Virginia Tech since 1987 and has won 251 games. Having taken the Hokies to 19 bowl games during his tenure, he's a stabilizing figure to the program.

Beamer also is known to be an admirable man that players and assistant coaches look up to, as he's worked the Hokies into one of the most respected programs around the country.

Recruits are advised to not make decisions based on head coaches, yet Beamer being the steady and stable head coach at Virginia Tech likely was a plus in helping land Kendall Fuller.

3. Family History, Past, Present and Future

6 of 8

Fuller has family history connected to the Hokie program as his older brother Vincent played football at Va. Tech and his other two older brothers Corey and Kyle are currently on the Hokie roster.

Surely, the fact that his older brother was a Hokie and two other brothers are currently Hokie players was a major draw for Kendall Fuller and helped Virginia Tech land his commitment.

2. Comfort Level with Virginia Tech

7 of 8

Fuller told Scout.com that he is most comfortable at Virginia Tech.

Being familiar with the program, having family there and growing up being exposed to Hokie football really puts him at ease and makes him comfortable—which I always say is extremely crucial for recruits when choosing a school.

1. His Mother Made the Decision for Him over a Year Ago

8 of 8

Fuller's coach, Bob Milloy, told Rivals.com recently that Fuller's mother told him over a year ago that Virginia Tech would be where Fuller would be signing.

Michigan and Clemson were schools in contention, but the decision on Va. Tech had actually been made over a year ago, and not by Kendall Fuller himself.

None of us want to disobey mother's wishes.
