Germany vs Argentina: Best Young Players in International Showdown

John DornJun 5, 2018

Germany and Argentina football clubs are set to face off in an international friendly Wednesday. It will be the countries' first meeting since July 3, 2010—a 4-0 route by Germany in the World Cup quarterfinal round. A lot has changed in the two years the clubs have gone without seeing each other, and new faces are bound to lead the way in this year's matchup.

German 23-year-old midfielder Marco Reus wasn't on the squad that defeated Argentina in 2010.

No. 11 of Borussia Dortmund netted 21 goals in 37 starts last season—a dramatic improvement over his previous season, when he scored only 12.

The attacker was named German Player of the Year by esteemed media members of his country and, at such a young age, the sky is the limit for Reus.

That's all according to Reus, as he told ESPN Soccernet, "It only starts now. At 23, I have not reached the end of my development." The midfielder continued: "Experience is an important factor, which I will add over the next years."

Reus understands that the Germans will need to contain Argentinian star Lionel Messi to come out victorious.

"He is an outstanding player and it's enjoyable to see him on the pitch. But we have seen how we could stop him and we will be well prepared to get a result," he said, according to Soccerway.

According to the report, Reus also noted that he's aware there are other young players trying to impress the national coach, as well. In his first matchup against the best athlete soccer has to offer, look for Reus to show us what he brings to the table, too.

On the other side, Messi's Argentina club has young studs of their own to bring to the table. 24-year-old Sergio Agüero is one of them.

Agüero is second on the squad in goals with 16, and is looking to make a name for himself, as well.

Agüero is the son-in-law of Argentine soccer's Diego Mardonna. He made his debut with Independiente at the age of 15, and hasn't looked back since.

He's shown glimpses of greatness overall, but has yet to show major signs of national-team stardom. The Man City forward can, at times, lose focus and try to do too much with the ball at his feet.

Once he proves he can keep his head on straight, Agüero will solidify his name among today's soccer greats. Wednesday though, look for him to impress alongside Lionel Messi in this international friendly.
