PGA Championship Payout 2012: Top Finishers Who Really Earned Their Money

Sam R. QuinnJun 5, 2018

The final major of the 2012 season, the PGA Championship, has come to a close. Some golfers head into the offseason with their heads held high, while others didn't exactly finish on the high note that they would have liked to.

Rory McIlroy dominated the fourth round and shot to the top of the leaderboard, winning the tournament by eight strokes over second-place finisher David Lynn.

Here you can find the top finishers who really earned their money at Kiawah Island this weekend, as well as the top payouts from the final tournament of the year.

Rory McIlroy: $1,445,000

No surprise here. Rory McIlroy was by far the best player on the course on Sunday, and the final score accurately reflects that.

McIlroy earned his near-$1.5 million paycheck despite posting six bogeys on Friday. Seven birdies to just two bogeys on Saturday helped set the stage for what proved to be a nearly perfect round on Sunday.

The 23-year-old Northern Irishman shot a 66 on the final day of the tournament—one shot shy of the best round of the day.

It was easy to tell that McIlroy had it going on early on Sunday. He broke the record for the largest margin of victory in the PGA Championship and became the new world No. 1 in the process.

Carl Pettersson: $384,500

Carl Petterson was atop the leaderboard after the first round, but faltered on Friday. Five bogeys in seven holes did him in during the second round, and he used the momentum that he gained towards the back end of Friday to turn in a solid performance on Saturday.

Despite double-bogeying the first hole he played on Sunday, he was able to bounce back and finish tied for third with three other golfers.

Four birdies in five holes from the third to the seventh put him in perfect position to finish the day high up enough to bring home a nice pay day.

If not for two bogeys on the back nine, Pettersson would have finished in the second spot ahead of David Lynn and more than doubled his take-home prize.

Blake Adams: $226,000

Blake Adams had a pretty ugly third round in South Carolina, but bounced back nicely to finish tied for seventh place at three-under par.

After racking up scores of 71 and 72 in the first two rounds of the tournament, he posted an abysmal 75 on Saturday. Thanks to four bogeys and a double-bogey, he plummeted and looked to be out of the running for the top-10.

Fortunately for Adams and his wallet, he was able to mount a comeback on Sunday by shooting the third-lowest score of the day.

There wasn't a blemish on his scorecard in the fourth round. He put up five birdies, including three straight on 15, 16 and 17.

Here are the top-10 finishers and their payouts.
