UFC 150 Start Time: Top Fights You Won't Want to Miss from Marquee Event
UFC 150 is set to take place on Saturday from the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colo., and while the entire card is certainly enticing to any fan of mixed martial arts, there are a few fights that reside above the rest and deserve the "can't-miss" label.
It simply isn't possible for UFC to put on an event in which every single fight is great, but Saturday's card appears to be very deep and should keep fans entertained throughout the night. The top of the card is especially good and could very easily produce several Fight of the Night candidates.
Here are the three best potential UFC 150 fights that you won't want to miss on Saturday night.
Where: Pepsi Center in Denver, Colo.
When: Saturday, Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. ET
Watch: PPV
Benson Henderson vs. Frankie Edgar
The UFC Lightweight Championship match between Benson Henderson and Frankie Edgar will highlight the UFC 150 card, and it is for good reason. Henderson has been a dominant force over his past several fights and is coming off a unanimous decision win over Edgar for the title back in February. That contest went all five rounds, and although Henderson was clearly the winner, Edgar put up a great fight.
Edgar will undoubtedly be out to recapture the title that he believes is rightfully his, and it won't be easy for Henderson to beat him twice. Henderson's strength lies in his incredible submission ability, while Edgar is more of a capable brawler. Both combatants figure to try to tailor the fight to their preference, but only one will be able to. Whoever does is likely to leave the Pepsi center as UFC Lightweight Champion.
Donald Cerrone vs. Melvin Guillard
Since Melvin Guillard failed to make weight for his lightweight bout against Donald Cerrone on Saturday, it will be fought at a catchweight of 157.5 lbs, and Guillard will have to submit a portion of his fight purse to Cerrone.
Since there isn't a title on the line, it shouldn't make much of a difference to those of us watching, however. Cerrone and Guillard are both very tough customers and they won't let semantics get in the way of an entertaining fight.
With the exception of a loss to Nate Diaz, Cerrone has been a dominant force as of late, winning seven of his past eight contests. Guillard bounced back from a couple straight losses and won his most recent fight, but Cerrone clearly has the momentum. Nine of Guillard's 10 career losses are by way of submission and Cerrone is a technician in that regard, so that is something worth keeping an eye on.
Jake Shields vs. Ed Herman
When Jake Shields and Ed Herman lock horns in a middleweight battle on Saturday night, both men will be in search of a big win in order to enter the discussion for a UFC Middleweight Championship shot. Both Shields and Herman have been a bit inconsistent as of late, but they are still well within their respective primes and have a lot to offer to UFC and the fans. Their styles should also mesh quite well together in the Octagon.
Both Shields and Herman favor submissions over other means of winning matches, so I would look for this to be a technical, mat-based affair with many close calls for both fighters.
They seem to be pretty evenly matched on paper, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if this particular match steals the show and ends up being the best of the night.
