Yohan Blake: Jamaican Is Only Man Who Can Stop Usain Bolt from Winning 200m Gold
Even though he is expected to win the gold medal in the 200-meter final on Thursday, Jamaican star Usain Bolt will not have an easy time making history in London.
Bolt will attempt to become the first man ever to win the 100-meter and 200-meter events in consecutive Summer Olympics after winning the 100-meter gold medal just a few days ago.
Bolt recently talked about the 200-meter final, via the Guardian:
""It's all about going through as easy as possible," Bolt said . "This is my favourite event. I'm focused and I'm ready. The track is fast and it's going to be a good race. There are a lot of good competitors, a lot of people who could spoil the party."
"
In an impressive field of sprinters, Blake is the lone man capable of making the podium with the gold medal instead of his Jamaican teammate. He beat Bolt in the 200 at the Jamaican trials, and is certainly capable of repeating this result.
Blake finished with the best time (20.01 seconds) of the 200 semifinal heats, while Bolt, who also won his heat, finished with a time of 20.18 seconds.
Blake has great technique, which allows him to start his races cleanly and effectively, while his incredible leg strength gives him the ability to keep up with and defeat taller competitors such as Bolt.
He will likely need to run a personal best in Thursday's 200 final to win the gold medal against Bolt, but that's not an impossible task for Blake.
The world record is 19.19 seconds, which was set by Bolt at the 2009 World Championships. It's unlikely that either Bolt or Blake set a new world record in the event, but both could set personal Olympic bests during this final.
Blake came into the Summer Games as the favorite in the 100-meters after he beat Bolt in the event at the Jamaican Olympic trials. However, he was not able to prevent his countryman from repeating as champion in the event despite finishing with a personal record of 9.75 seconds.
His silver medal in the 100 was an accomplishment to be proud of, but he does have one more opportunity to steal some of the spotlight and win his first career Olympic gold medal.
The stage is set for Bolt to become the best sprinter of all time, but Blake is a legitimate threat to his chances of becoming the first man to successfully defend his gold medals in the 100 and 200-meter events at the Olympics.
The second showdown between these two Jamaican stars promises to be one of the most memorable moments of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games and will be a battle you cannot afford to miss.
