Boise State Football Training Camp: Injuries, Analysis and Position Battles
We have seen the Boise State Broncos grow over the years, from winning double-digit games, to appearing in BCS bowls and making a case for playing for a possible national championship. Now will be the biggest test in the program's history, as it only returns a handful of starters on both sides of the ball. The majority of the stars are gone, including quarterback Kellen Moore, who went 50-3 as a starter.
Still, the Broncos are expected to compete for a MWC title once again, as well as having an outside shot at another BCS bowl, but it certainly won't be easy.
As Boise State tries to fill in the holes on its roster, stay tuned for all of the latest updates, news, injuries and more throughout fall camp.

1 of 5There is no concrete decision on who will replace Kellen Moore and who will be the starting quarterback, but according to Brian Murphy of Idaho Statesman, the starter is without question Joe Southwick.
Southwick was the backup behind Moore last season, but has not seen much playing time throughout his career. Still, although he is in competition with players such as Grant Hedrick and Jimmy Laughrea, it was Southwick that received every snap with the first-team offense during the weekends scrimmage.
Head coach Chris Petersen still is keeping everything quiet, but if the scrimmage told us anything, it is that Southwick is the guy who will take on the huge task of replacing a legend in Moore.
“We haven’t made a decision. When we do make a decision, we will tell everybody,” Petersen said. “You guys know as much as I do about how he did. You saw what I saw.”

2 of 5Senior running back Drew Wright is not only preparing for a bigger role in this offense, he is also doing a lot of coaching as he goes along. With the Broncos losing many starters from a year ago, many of the players replacing them are freshman or players who have seen very little playing time in their careers. “I’m actually doing a lot more (coaching) than I probably expected,” Wright said. “Me and (senior D.J. Harper) are learning as we go, because we’ve never had to do that before. It was kind of hard during the summer.”
Wright will be the backup running back behind D.J. Harper this year, but knows he will likely see more action than he has throughout his career at Boise.
“I just need to be able to go in there and gain yards. If D.J. starts getting tired, I have to be able to go in there and contribute and keep moving the ball just like D.J. did.”
Wright has rushed for 311 yards in his career and has three touchdowns.

3 of 5The Boise State Broncos held their first scrimmage during the weekend and majority of the attention was on the quarterback position. But while Bronco coaches are looking for more answers as camp continues to drag out, they may have more questions than they started with.
“They were average,” Petersen said after the closed scrimmage. “... It’s different than just practice. We’ll be looking forward to coming out here next Saturday with a crowd and hopefully taking a step forward.” (Via Dave Southorn of The Idaho Press Tribune)
The quarterback battle is of course between Joe Southwick, Grant Hedrick, Jimmy Laughrea and Nick Patti, but Petersen says that neither is where they need to be in order to be named a starter just yet.
“I think there’s some separation, but it’s not enough to go ‘OK, we’ve got our guy,’” Petersen said. “Every time I start to think ‘we might have our guy,’ we don’t have our guy. We’ll have a guy — eventually.”

4 of 5Although Boise State has several issues it must address, everyone is wondering who is going to replace quarterback Kellen Moore. Every candidate to choose from is on an even playing field as all four players (Joe Southwick, Jimmy Laughrea, Grant Hedrick and Nick Patti) lack a ton of experience heading into fall camp.
Southwick seems to be the front-runner considering he was the backup behind Moore the last two seasons and has thrown the ball a total of 54 times.
When head coach Chris Petersen was asked about a possible deadline on a decision, he said it may come sooner than you think.
“We’ll probably get there in a week or so—I don’t know—that’s not necessarily the plan, but usually (it’s) how things play out,” Petersen said. “We’ve got to scrimmage a little bit.” (Via Dave Southorn of the Idaho Press-Tribune)
Who Is the Starting Kicker?
With all of the touchdowns Boise scored last season, field goals weren't needed much. But out of the nine attempts, only six were made, which is something the coaching staff would like to see improve during fall camp.
Michael Frisina and Dan Goodale, the two kickers who split time last season, are the two that are battling for the starting position.
“Absolutely, you’d think it’d be one of those two guys, but the best man is going to play, that’s the bottom line,” special teams coach Scott Huff said. (Via Dave Southorn of the Idaho Press-Tribune)
Head coach Petersen also told the newspaper that he would like to see more growth at the position, as well as more consistency.
