Miami Football 2012: Ray-Ray Armstrong Filing an Injunction Is the Smart Move
The Miami Hurricanes cut bait with big-time talent Ray-Ray Armstrong in July; after a string of suspensions, the player expected to break out in 2012 was no more. Well, according to ESPN, the would-be senior safety is not going to go quietly into the night. He's lawyered up and is filing for an injunction to overturn the dismissal.
""Miami made a unilateral decision to dismiss Ray-Ray without NCAA process," [Armstrong's lawyer] Matt Morgan of Orlando said. "We believe Miami is using Ray-Ray as a sacrificial lamb to the NCAA."
"
A month ago, with no hard and fast confirmation of the violations, that's about how we viewed things here at Your Best 11. Now, with the power of a lawyer, Armstrong is going to challenge his dismissal. After viewing the cases of players like Devon Ramsay and Michael McAdoo at North Carolina, the move makes sense.
Schools approach dealings with the NCAA in a couple different fashions. Some schools batten down the hatches and weather the storm by lawyering up against the governing body and forcing them to prove every allegation, every rumor and every detail in order to screw them to the floor. Some schools get smart and give the NCAA only what the NCAA already has in the way of information; they don't shut up, but they also aren't volunteering information.
But other schools decide to open it up. Total compliance. Giving in to the NCAA's whims and kowtowing at their power altar because the threat of probation, postseason bans, loss of scholarships and the like are scary. They figure total cooperation is the key to getting off easy.
For Miami, a school that desperately wants to minimize whatever punishment is coming down the chute, the dismissal of Armstrong makes sense. They can't afford the headaches or the possibility of a rule-breaker on the team while they are under NCAA investigation.
Unfortunately for Miami and its fans, wanting to get rid of a headache or possible violator may not be enough to keep Ray-Ray Armstrong off the team once this becomes a legal matter. This will be quite the legal battle to watch as the Hurricanes prepare for the season and Armstrong fights to get back on the roster.
