Olympic Soccer TV Schedule: Men's and Women's Finals Can't Be Missed
Olympic soccer may not be as compelling as the World Cup or even the European Championships, but it's hard to argue against the compelling finals the 2012 London Games will provide.
On the men's side, two teams that have never won gold will meet when a stacked Brazilian team faces a solid Mexican side. Pretty shocking that the Brazilian men don't have a slew of golds already, right?
In the women's final, it's a rematch of the 2011 World Cup final, when a United States team with revenge on its mind takes on a clinical and technical Japanese squad.
Aside from the compelling storylines, this game is rife with stars. On Brazil alone you have a ridiculous amount of the world's best players, with Neymar, Hulk, Leandro Damiao, Thiago Silva, Marcelo and Oscar (to name just a few) leading the way.
Mexico is in danger of playing the game without its star forward, Giovani Dos Santos, who had to leave Tuesday's win over Japan with a muscle injury. Without Dos Santos, a Mexican team already coming into the game as underdogs would have a major uphill fight.
There will be no lack of star power when the United States faces Japan either, with Alex Morgan, Abby Wambach and Megan Rapinoe squaring off against Homare Sawa. It may have taken a dramatic 123rd-minute goal by Morgan in overtime for the United States to beat Canada, but the U.S. women will be highly motivated and focused when they face Japan.
The 2011 shootout loss in the World Cup final hasn't been forgotten by the United States team, that much is for certain.
So which teams will win?
It's hard to bet against a Brazilian team this stacked, especially if Dos Santos can't go for Mexico. As for the the ladies, well, I'm not willing to bet against this United States team. The motivation is there, they have a never-say-die spirit and, you know, I really want them to win.
A little national spirit never hurt anyone.
All in all, these are two brilliant gold-medal games you won't want to miss. Be sure to check out the remaining schedule for all of the Olympic soccer yet to be played.
