Southampton made a surprising splash on transfer deadline day by signing Bolgna's Gaston Ramirez.
The club confirmed the deal on its Twitter, and AFP reported via Yahoo Sports reported that the transfer was for a club-record fee of £12 million.
"Saints are pleased to confirm the signing of Uruguay international Gastón Ramírez from Italian side Bologna: saintsfc.co.uk/news/article/r… #saintsfc
— Southampton FC (@officialsaints) August 31, 2012"
Ramirez is a rising star with vast potential. The 21-year-old Uruguayan will play in important part in Southampton's quest to stay in the English Premier League.
Michael Essien
3 of 34UPDATE: Friday, August 31 at 6:35 p.m. ET by Ben Chodos
In one of the more surprising moves on transfer deadline day, Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien is headed to La Liga champions Real Madrid for the remainder of the season.
Sky Sports reported the deal via Twtiter.
"Michael Essien joins Real Madrid on season-long loan from Chelsea #skydeadlineday
— Sky Sports News (@SkySportsNews) August 31, 2012"
The 29-year-old had not been a regular in the Blues' starting-11 due to injuries in several of his seasons at Stamford Bridge, and a change of scenery may allow him to finally regain his form.
Joey Barton
4 of 34UPDATE: Friday, August 31 at 6:25 p.m. ET by Ben Chodos
Mercurial midfielder Joey Barton will not be up to any antics with Queens Park Rangers this year, and he is headed to Ligue 1 for the rest of the season.
BBC Sport reported that Marseille have signed the English international on loan.
"BREAKING: Joey Barton has joined French club Marseille on a season-long loan deal.#bbcfootball
— BBC Sport (@BBCSport) August 31, 2012"
Barton was last seen on the pitch last season in an ugly skirmish with several Manchester City players. Marseille will hope the talented midfielder can keep his temper under control while playing in France.
Joao Moutinho
5 of 34UPDATE: Friday, August 31 at 6:20 p.m. ET by Ben Chodos
Tottenham fans who celebrated too early will be disappointed, as the team will likely lose out on Jaoo Moutinho.
Fox Soccer reported that the midfielder will be staying with Porto.
"REPORT: Joao Moutinho deal to Spurs dead according to Portuguese media.
— FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) August 31, 2012"
Moutinho was pegged as Luka Modric's replacement, and the team's failure to sign the Portuguese international will leave Spurs with questions in the middle of the pitch.
----------END OF UPDATE-----------
According to The Daily Mail on Friday, August 31, Tottenham Hotspur have agreed to sign Porto midfielder Joao Moutinho for £22 million.
The 25-year-old has played for Porto since 2010, and boasts a versatile skill set that Tottenham are certainly excited about.
In addition to playing at a high level in Europe, Moutinho has performed at the international level for the Portuguese national team since 2005.
Matija Nastasic
6 of 34UPDATE: Friday, August 31 at 7:10 p.m. ET by Ben Chodos
Manchester City were the biggest spenders on transfer deadline day and one of their splashes was on Fiorentina's teenage defender Matija Nastasic.
Fox Soccer confirmed the transfer via Twitter, noting that City sent Stefan Savic—one of its young backs—to Fiorentina as part of the deal.
Nastasic is a 19-year-old from Serbia, and he projects to be an excellent player at the heart City's defense in the future.
Yossi Benayoun
7 of 34UPDATE: Friday, August 31 at 7:20 p.m. ET by Ben Chodos
Chelsea midfielder Yossi Benayoun is headed back to West Ham United for the remainder of the season.
The Israeli international confirmed the move via his Twitter.
"But I'm very happy to confirm that I will join on loan to West Ham! Can't wait to start..great club.
— Yossi Benayoun (@YossiBenayoun15) August 31, 2012"
Benayoun, 32, was a fixture in West Ham's starting lineup before spending time with Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal.
Rafael van der Vaart
8 of 34UPDATE: Friday, August 31 at 5:55 p.m. ET by Ben Chodos
Tottenham were one of the most active clubs on transfer deadline day, and Spurs sold midfielder Rafael van der Vaart to Hamburg.
Sky Sports reported the Dutchman's move to the Bundesliga via Twitter.
"Hamburg complete signing of Rafael van der Vaart from Tottenham on a three-year deal #skydeadlineday
— Sky Sports News (@SkySportsNews) August 31, 2012"
The attacking midfielder became the odd-man out when new arrivals such as Gylfi Sigurdsson and Clint Dempsey crowded the London club's front line.
Nigel De Jong
9 of 34UPDATE: Friday, August 31 at 5:50 p.m. ET by Ben Chodos
Manchester City was both buying and selling on deadline day, and Roberto Mancini chose to send Dutch midfielder Nigel De Jong to AC Milan.
Sky Sports reported the deal via Twitter.
"AC Milan have signed Nigel de Jong from Manchester City #skydeadlineday #mcfc
— Sky Sports News (@SkySportsNews) August 31, 2012"
De Jong was one of many talented players to be buried by the slew of signings that City has made in recent years, and he will be glad to get off the bench and onto the pitch at the San Siro.
Charlie Adam
10 of 34UPDATE: Friday, August 31 at 5:40 p.m. ET by Ben Chodos
Charlie Adam's brief stint with Liverpool is now over.
Sky Sports reported via Twitter that the Scot has completed a move to Stoke City.
"Stoke sign Charlie Adam from Liverpool on four-year deal #skydeadlineday
— Sky Sports News (@SkySportsNews) August 31, 2012"
Adam came to Merseyside from Blackpool last season, but did not factor in Brendan Rodgers' long-term plans. His accurate long balls will be much more appreciated by Tony Pulis and the Potters.
Clint Dempsey
11 of 34UPDATE: Friday, August 31 at 5:30 p.m. ET by Ben Chodos
Clint Dempsey has found a new home and he will not be leaving London. ESPN FC reported that the American agreed to terms with the Tottenham Hotspurs.
"BREAKING: Clint Dempsey has joined Tottenham on a three-year deal for £6 million
— ESPN FC (@ESPNFC) August 31, 2012"
Spurs were a dark horse in the race for Dempsey, but as is often the case with the transfer window, there was an unexpected twist on deadline day. Dempsey's fans will be relieved to see him back on the pitch.
----------END OF UPDATE-----------
UPDATE: Friday, August 31 at 7:35 a.m. by Patrick Clarke
According to Sky Sports via Twitter on Friday morning, Aston Villa FC has dropped out of the race to land American forward Clint Dempsey.
There are just hours remaining for Dempsey's preferred club, Liverpool to strike a deal.
----------END OF UPDATE-----------
UPDATE: Wednesday, August 29 at 8:45 a.m. ET
"Liverpool's long pursuit of Fulham forward Clint Dempsey looks set to end in failure after Sunderland opened talks with the American.
The 29-year-old has told Cottagers boss Martin Jol he doesn't want to play for the club again and has subsequently been left out of the opening two weekends of the Premier League.
"
The move is set to be for £8 million. If it indeed happens, it will be a major disappointment for Dempsey, whose entire reasoning for wanting a move in the first place was to play Champions' League football.
----------END OF UPDATE-----------
UPDATE: Thursday, August 23 at 2:55 p.m. ET
Well, if you thought the saga between Clint Dempsey and Fulham was contentious before, just wait until you see what Ian Darke of ESPN tweeted on Thursday afternoon:
"A Fulham sourcetells me ClintDempsey being made to train with youth team while in dispute with club
— Ian Darke (@IanDarkeESPN) August 23, 2012"
No matter which side you fall on in this issue, that's not exactly the most dignified move by Fulham. The chances of Dempsey suiting up for the club seem slim to none at this point.
----------END OF UPDATE----------
For quite some time now, it's been thought that the favorites to land Clint Dempsey in a transfer from Fulham were Liverpool. Dempsey would seemingly fit either wide or as an attacking midfielder in Brendan Rodgers 4-3-3, and would give the Reds some added goal-scoring punch.
Still, we've seen nothing develop in terms of a deal between the two teams. But as it turns out, that may not be due to Liverpool's lack of interest but rather because Fulham isn't pleased with how the Reds have gone about pursuing the player.
From Sky Sports:
"Fulham have made an official complaint to the Premier League about Liverpool's pursuit of Clint Dempsey. #FFC #LFC
"
"— Sky Sports (@SkySports) August 23, 2012"
As Wayne Veysey of Goal.com adds, Fulham is perturbed that Rodgers made it publicly known at a press conference in July that the Reds had pursued Dempsey.
As though it was some big secret.
The Dempsey drama needs to end. Fulham needs to move on and get what they can for the midfielder. This has been nothing but a distraction for the club from the start, and frankly, neither Dempsey nor Fulham have handled this particularly well.
Nicklas Bendtner
12 of 34Arsenal forward Nicklas Bendtner is headed to Juventus on a season-long loan, according to Sky Sports on Friday, August 31.
According to the report, Bendtner is eyeing a potential signing with the Italian club down the road.
The Denmark native is 24 years old and an elite talent when he takes to the air in front of the opponent's net.
Maicon
13 of 34UPDATE: Friday, August 31 at 11:30 a.m. ET by Patrick Clarke
Maicon and Manchester City have officially joined forces according to a report by Sky Sports. The Brazilian veteran is headed to England to showcase his defensive prowess in the EPL.
--------End of Update---------
According to a report by Sky Sports on Friday, August 31, Inter Milan say that Brazilian defender Maicon will soon agree to join the Premier League's Manchester City.
At age 31, Maicon can still bring plenty to the pitch, and could provide Roberto Mancini with an experienced presence at the back.
Maicon has tons of international experience playing with the Brazilian national team, and has been a mainstay for Inter Milan for the past six seasons.
Hugo Lloris
14 of 34UPDATE: Friday, August 31 at 6:10 p.m. ET by Ben Chodos
The speculation is over and Hugo Lloris is officially with the Tottenham Hotspurs.
The club announced the news via its Twitter.
"We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Olympique Lyonnais for the transfer of goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
— Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) August 31, 2012"
Lloris will likely take over duties as the first-team keeper from Brad Friedel.

UPDATE: Friday, August 31 at 10:10 a.m. ET by Patrick Clarke
According to a Sky Sports report by Graeme Bailey on Friday, Lyon have dismissed reports that they have agreed to send Hugo Lloris to Tottenham, but rather gave him permission to visit England.
Here is Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas on the situation:
"Nothing is done, but there are close discussions, he has been allowed to go to the club Tottenham, to be ready in case [a deal happens].
"
Stay tuned for more as Lloris' status with Tottenham develops.
--------End of Update--------
UPDATE: Friday, August 31 at 8:50 a.m. ET by Patrick Clarke
According to The Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur have agreed to a deal with Lyon to acquire goalkeeper Hugo Lloris:
"...the clubs finally reached an accord after Tottenham agreed to restructure the deal and pay more up front.
"
The 25-year-old will now make the leap from France to England this summer.
--------End of Update--------
With money to spend after Luka Modric was sold to REal Madrid, Tottenham has set their crosshairs on one of the top young goalkeepers in the world, Lyon's Hugo Lloris. And according to John Cross of the Mirror, it looks like Spurs are about to buy themselves a new keeper:
"France keeper Hugo Lloris is set to complete a £12million move to Tottenham.
Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has confirmed they have given Lloris permission to speak to Spurs and make a decision on his future.
Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas has made Lloris his No1 target ahead of Birmingham’s emerging England prospect Jack Butland, who is seen as the back-up option.
"
Spurs have already landed Moussa Dembele, and they have been linked to a number of names since Modric took a hike. Landing Lloris would be a huge move, and probably the first of a few as the deadline nears.
Andy Carroll
15 of 34UPDATE: Thursday, August 30 at 3:47 p.m. ET by Tim Keeney
Carroll to West Ham is official, as Liverpool's official website has made the announcement.
The English international will spend the entire 2012-13 season in East London, but won't sign a long-term deal. Liverpool fans will be hoping he finds his form sometime in the next 12 months.
------End of Update------
UPDATE: Thursday, August 30 at 3:30 p.m. ET by Tim Keeney
Andy Carroll's disappointing tenure with Liverpool could finally be over. At least for now. The inconsistent English international has reportedly agreed to join West Ham for the 2012-13 season.
The news comes from The Mirror's David Maddock:
"The England international called time on a disastrous spell with Liverpool last night, when he travelled to London to agree terms with West Ham over a 12 month loan deal.
Carroll agreed the loan deal though, ONLY on the condition there was NO commitment to a permanent deal at the end of the season.
"
Carroll had recently been removed from Brendan Rodgers' first team, and while moving to East London was far from his top choice, he has apparently reluctantly agreed. To be clear, he has yet to sign the loan. This is simply a rumor at this point and nothing is official, although it appears close.
------End of Update------
UPDATE: Thursday, August 30 at 9:45a.m. ET
It looks as though West Ham is making another push to land Andy Carroll, according to Dominic King of the Daily Mail:
"West Ham will launch a final attempt to land Andy Carroll before the window closes with a deal that will shape Liverpool's transfer fortunes.
Though the England striker has consistently made it clear he does not want to leave Anfield, his omission from the squad for Thursday night's Europa League qualifier against Hearts effectively means his Liverpool career is over.
"
According to King, the deal would initially be a loan (with West Ham picking up Carroll's £80,000 per week tab) with the club then signing him on a permanent basis for £17 million.
Brendan Rodgers is thought to fancy Theo Walcott—and can't afford him unless he offloads Carroll—even though it appears more and more likely the winger will stay at Arsenal. It just gets more intriguing by the day, doesn't it?
----------END OF UPDATE----------
UPDATE: Sunday, August 26 at 10:10 a.m. ET
It looks as though we can put to rest any speculation that Andy Carroll will be heading to Newcastle. From Sean Mullan of Goal.com:
"Newcastle have already had one loan bid - with a view to a permanent move - rejected, and now Pardew says there is little chance of Carroll returning to the North East before the transfer window closes on September 1.
"I don't think so," he told reporters when asked about the possibility of a fresh approach for Carroll.
"We're talking more of a younger player who could perhaps take the club forward. We've taken two or three younger players this season who have done very well for us.
"It depends if the price is right and everything fits the bill."
"
It's looking more and more that Carroll will be staying put and playing a bit role for Liverpool, at least until January.
-----------END OF UPDATE-----------
UPDATE: Tuesday, August 21 at 12:00 p.m. ET
First he is bound to leave. Then he is bound to stay. Where is Andy Carroll going to play this season?
He'll need to make up his mind soon, as Liverpool don't want to wait until the deadline to move him. From David Maddock of the Mirror:
"Liverpool will sit down with Andy Carroll and spell out their point blank refusal to be rushed into a panic deal on the final day of the transfer window.
That means the striker must realistically decide his future by the end of this week or resign himself to at least four months on the fringes at Anfield.
The feeling persists the England striker is waiting on his hometown club Newcastle to re-sign him on deadline day at the end of the month.
"
Tottenham are also thought to have interest. Don't be surprised if Carroll is moved after all—he simply doesn't appear to be a fit in Brendan Rogers' system.
---------END OF UPDATE---------
Liverpool's Andy Carroll has made it known that he does not want his time with Liverpool to come to an end despite the massive contract that West Ham United has offered him (via ESPN).
The prospective eight-year deal worth £36 million is apparently not enough to draw Carroll in. The 23-year-old striker says he will refuse a return to Newcastle United as well.
For now, it looks like Carroll won't be finding a new home next season, but we've seen that things can turn around rapidly on the transfer market.
Didier Drogba
16 of 34Wait—isn't he in China now?
Indeed he is, playing for Shanghai Shenhua. But it's very possible he won't be for very long, and Juventus are thought to be keen to add the striker, according to John Cross of the Mirror:
"Italian giants Juventus have made a dramatic attempt to snatch Didier Drogba.
Juventus are desperate for a new striker and made an enquiry after it emerged that the Chinese club Drogba signed for earlier this summer are facing a financial crisis.
A boardroom power struggle has broken out at Shanghai Shenhua, just weeks after they landed Chelsea legend Drogba on a two and a half year deal worth a stunning £200,000-a-week.
"
In other words, the Champions' League may not have seen the last of Mr. Drogba. Just imagine Drogba meeting up against Chelsea in this year's tournament—how disconcerting would that be for fans of the Blues?
Esteban Granero and Stephane M'bia
17 of 34QPR continues to stay busy this summer.
According to the Mirror, QPR have agreed to a fee with Real Madrid to sign midfielder Esteban Granero on a permanent deal. And according to Stephane M'bia (via the Mirror), he will also be joining QPR:
""Marseille is still in my heart, I won my first titles here," said M'bia.
"I have chosen Queens Park Rangers despite a last-minute bid from Fenerbahce.
"It's a new challenge to enjoy. I always aim as high as possible.
"I am excited but calm over this move. I will discover another world."
"
Apparently this summer, QPR is the place to be.
Theo Walcott
18 of 34UPDATE: Thursday, August 30 at 8:45 a.m. ET
According to John Cross of the Mirror, Arsene Wenger is confident that Theo Walcott is sticking around.
"Arsene Wenger is convinced Theo Walcott will stay at Arsenal after a heart-to-heart meeting.
The clear-the-air conversation at the training ground saw Walcott reassure Gunners manager Wenger that he does not want to leave and wants to commit himself to a new contract.
"
That's good news for Gunners fans, who have become weary of saying goodbye in the last two summers.
UPDATE: Wednesday, August 29 at 1:30 p.m. ET
Good news, Arsenal fans—at least one of your big names will be sticking around. Well, for now at least.
According to Jeremy Wilson of The Telegraph, Walcott isn't ready to depart the Gunners just yet:
"Although Walcott has told Wenger that he is not currently prepared to accept the offer of a five-year £75,000-a-week contract, he did inform the Arsenal manager that he wants to remain at the club and hold further discussions about his future.
"
"Until Wenger’s talks with Walcott today, the view at Arsenal was that they were willing to sell their 23-year-old winger if he did not agree to sign a new contract by Friday’s closure of the transfer window.
"
If this is true, Walcott must have given Wenger some level of assurance that he wouldn't drag this situation out and bolt in the summer on a free transfer if negotiations didn't go well. Stay tuned.
UPDATE: Tuesday, August 28 at 5:35 p.m. ET by Ben Chodos
The latest Arsenal transfer saga looks set for a familiar result. The player in question this time is Theo Walcott, and the young winger appears ready for an Emirates exit.
The Daily Telegraph's Jeremy Wilson reported via Twitter that Walcott and the Gunners' have reached an impasse in their contract negotiations.
"Arsenal offer to Walcott is £75,000-a-week. No sense that they will improve it. Ending feels inevitable
— Jeremy Wilson (@JWTelegraph) August 28, 2012"
With Walcott not willing to accept less money, he will likely explore options to go to another club that will pay him according to his demands.
Wilson went on to report that the Gunners have not given up on him, but the phone has started to ring, and management is certainly going to listen to the calls.
"Mood at Arsenal is that they hope Walcott changes his mind but they are open to offers if not...
— Jeremy Wilson (@JWTelegraph) August 28, 2012"
"Liverpool only club to have made an inquiry to Arsenal for Walcott...but Man City also interested
— Jeremy Wilson (@JWTelegraph) August 28, 2012"
If this ends with Walcott leaving London, he would join Robin van Persie on his way out as one of the attackers involved in a revolving door of changes for for the Gunners this summer.
Dimitar Berbatov
19 of 34UPDATE: Friday, August 31 at 10:45 a.m. ET by Patrick Clarke
Berbatov is officially set to join Fulham this season, according to the club's Twitter account:
"He's signed! Dimitar Berbatov has completed his move to Fulham bit.ly/PFEF6J #ffc
— Fulham Football Club (@FulhamFC) August 31, 2012"
The former Manchester United striker will now have more opportunities to see the field in the EPL in 2012-13.
----------END OF UPDATE----------
UPDATE: Thursday, August 30 at 9 p.m. ET
Fiorentina? Juventus?
Nah. Today, it's all about... Fulham?
According to the Mirror, "Dimitar Berbatov is being linked with Fulham after seemingly snubbing first Fiorentina and then Juventus in a matter of hours." The story goes he was all set to fly to Florence to finalize a deal with Fiorentina, but Juventus interest caused him to nix those plans.
And now it appears he wants to stay in England for "family reasons." This could get interesting.
----------END OF UPDATE----------
UPDATE: Wednesday, August 29 at 6:50 p.m. ET by Ben Chodos
The out-of-favor Manchester United striker appears set for a move to Italy, but his Serie A arrival will be met with controversy.
Fiorentina jumped out as the frontrunners to land the 31-year-old Bulgarian. They appeared set to sign Dimitar Berbatov as he was en route to Italy to finalize a deal, according to The Daily Mail.
However, Juventus intervened and made a more competitive offer and now look to be the ones who will sign Berbatov, as noted by Goal.com's Romeo Agresti.
Juventus' agressive pursuit of the striker has rubbed Fiorentina the wrong way, and Fox Sports and Four Four Two's James Horncastle reports via Twitter that the club is irate over the recent turn of events.
"Fiorentina furious. Claim they got green light from United and a verbal agreement from Berba. Paid for tickets to Florence. Never turned up
— James Horncastle (@JamesHorncastle) August 29, 2012"
"Fiorentina slam the “arrogance of other clubs” in hijacking Berba deal.
— James Horncastle (@JamesHorncastle) August 29, 2012"
If Serie A fans were looking for a new story line to make this season more exciting, they appear to have received their wish.
Wayne Rooney
20 of 34UPDATE: Wednesday, August 29 at 8:45 a.m.
"Wayne Rooney fears Manchester United are preparing to offload him for £40million.
Rooney's relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson has broken down, with United now ready to cash in on the England striker.
With Robin van Persie, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez, Ferguson feels he has enough options in attack to cope without Rooney. Hernandez has publicly declared he is ready to accept the challenge of replacing Rooney."
Again, this seems unlikely. Still, it would be a major shakeup in the EPL if Rooney would depart. United do have the forward options to soften the blow of such a departure, but players of Rooney's clash don't exactly grow on trees.
File this one away in the "probably not going to happen" cabinet for now.
Nani
21 of 34UPDATE: Wednesday, August 29 at 8:45 a.m.
With contract talks rumored to have stalled between the winger and Manchester United, Nani could see himself sold before Friday. From David McDonnell of the Daily Mirror:
"Team-mate Nani, who was left out of United’s squad against Fulham, could soon be on his way to Zenit St Petersburg in a £22m deal as contract talks stalled.
"
With Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young already on the wing, Nani is expendable if his contract demands are beyond what Sir Alex Ferguson and Man U are willing to pay. While they are certainly better off having the Portuguese winger available, his departure would not be a devastating one.
Leandro Damiao
22 of 34UPDATE: Wednesday, August 29 at 8:45 a.m.
Tottenham have been hot on the trail of the Brazilian striker, but they won't be landing him this summer according to Internacional vice-president Luciano Davi (via Paulo Freitas of Sky Sports):
""Our intention is that Leandro Damiao doesn't leave this year," Davi told Globo Esporte.
"He is an Internacional player until December. Their offer wasn't relevant and we are not interested in selling him.
"Tottenham came to us but their offer didn't match our valuation of him. Leandro Damiao is a national team striker and we have to value that."
"
In other words, come back with a better offer in January, Spurs. And make sure it's a lucrative offer we can't refuse.
----------END OF UPDATE----------
Internacional striker Leandro Damiao has been at the top of his game during the 2012 London Olympics, making him all the more enticing for potential suitors.
According to ESPN, "Internacional vice-president Luciano Davi expects offers to come in for Leandro Damiao after his Olympic success..."
Damiao is just 23 years old and has shown that he has the potential to evolve into an international star. The ESPN report states that AC Milan is interested in Damiao, but the most recent price tag of €25 million is not to vice president Adriano Galliani's liking.
We'll have to wait and see what becomes of Damiao and his tenure at Internacional, but signs point to his career in South America coming to an end.
Nuri Sahin
23 of 34UPDATE: Thursday, August 23 at 6:31 p.m. EDT by Tim Keeney
Nuri Sahin will officially head to Liverpool on a loan, or at least that's what Reds manager Brendan Rodgers thinks (via skysports.com):
"Now Rodgers, who worked with Real boss Jose Mourinho
atChelsea,
believes a deal is imminent for Sahin
to go on loan to Anfield instead.
"Hopefully in the next 24 hours we will get some confirmation on that," said the Liverpool
"manager after his side's Europa League win at Hearts.
This would be huge for Liverpool, and it sounds as if the deal should be very soon, although if the past 24 hours are any indication, this one isn't complete until the official papers are signed. Stay tuned.
-----End of Update-----
UPDATE: Thursday, August 23 at 10:45 a.m. ET
It was thought to be a mere formality that Sahin would land with Arsenal. But now it appears that Liverpool are going to land his services. From Ed Malyon of the Mirror:
"The Spanish football press are reporting that Nuri Sahin's future will be finally sorted in the next day or so, with the Real Madrid midfielder having changed his mind over an Arsenal switch."
"It was Liverpool who were the first club to concrete their interest in the former Borussia Dortmund man, but Sahin was hoping to push through a move to the Emirates Stadium as recently as Tuesday due to his desire to play under Arsene Wenger.
The Gunners seem to have blown their chance, however, by insisting that they are after a permanent deal, and not a loan.
"
This one has been a pretty back-and-forth affair between Liverpool and Arsenal, so I wouldn't expect this saga to be over just yet. If nothing else, it could be a ploy by Sahin's agent to convince Arsenal, the club Sahin prefers, to accept that Real Madrid will only accept a loan offer.
----------END OF UPDATE----------
UPDATE: Tuesday, August 21 at 3:55 p.m. ET
It would appear that Arsenal and Real Madrid have finally come to an agreement on the long-rumored loan of Nuri Sahin. Sky Sports has the details:
"Sky Sports sources understand a deal has been agreed for Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin to move to Arsenal.
The Gunners have wanted to sign the former Borussia Dortmund star on loan and stepped up their interest after Monday's sale of Alex Song to Barcelona.
An agreement has now been reached between Arsenal and Real and the move could happen before the weekend if Sahin wants to make the switch to Emirates Stadium.
"
For anyone who watched Arsenal finish in a 0-0 tie with Sunderland on Saturday, it's no secret that the Gunners could use a player of Sahin's class in the midfield immediately. Santi Cazorla impressed, but in general the Gunners suffered from a lack of creativity and inventiveness in the attack.
-----------END OF UPDATE----------
UPDATE: Monday, August 20 at 7:10 p.m. ET by Richard Langford
In true roller-coaster fashion, it appears that Arsenal's acquisition of Nuri Sahin, which seemed like almost a done deal on Sunday, has stalled out.
At least if the report by The Daily Mail's Matt Barlow is to be believed.
"Wenger wants to replace Alex Song by signing Sahin, 23, on a one-year loan but negotiations have become locked on the terms of an option to buy him permanently next year.
"
This is turning into a long affair. However, that should be enough to give Arsenal fans hope because this report certainly doesn't mean acquisition of Sahin is out of the question. This is simply the next step in the negotiations.
----------END OF UPDATE----------
UPDATE: Sunday, August 19 at 1:30 p.m. ET
Well, it's not all gloom and doom for Arsenal—it appears that Sahin will be joining the Gunners on a season-long loan. From John Cross of the Mirror:
"Arsene Wenger has agreed a deal to sign Real Madrid starlet Nuri Sahin.
Arsenal boss Wenger has held talks with Sahin and persuaded the Turkish midfielder to join on a one-year loan deal.
Sahin, 23, wants to come to Arsenal for Champions League—even though Liverpool offered better financial terms to Real Madrid.
"
It's a nice twist for an Arsenal team that sees more top talents head out the door to win trophies than the other way around these days. The loss of Alex Song, for one, is lessened by Sahin's arrival at the Emirates.
----------END OF UPDATE----------
It's been a rough week for Arsenal—just a day after finally caving and selling Robin van Persie, it appeared the team also lost Real Madrid's Nuri Sahin, who they were linked to throughout the summer.
"Brendan Rodgers is continuing his overhaul of Liverpool by taking Nuri Sahin on a season-long loan from Real Madrid.
The agreement with the Spanish champions Real over the midfielder's move to Anfield includes an option for a permanent deal, and he is expected to be unveiled on Thursday.
"
However, it would appear that Arsene Wenger was able to convince Sahin to hold off on the loan to Anfield. This remains a fluid situation, with both Liverpool and Arsenal vying for the young midfielder's services.
Emmanuel Adebayor
24 of 34"The north Londoners are locked in a stalement with Adebayor , who refuses to budge on his £175,000-a-week wages and will also not take a pay-off.
Spurs have been exploring alternatives for some time and are now looking at the possibility of a move for Dzeko who, despite his goal in Sunday's 3-2 win over Southampton, is still surplus to requirements at the champions.
"
Adebayor was a nice fit for the Spurs last year, but he may need to be flexible if he wants to see the pitch in something other than a substitute role for Manchester City this year. I would expect he'll eventually lower his contract demands and head to Tottenham.
---------END OF UPDATE---------
With Jovetic likely to head to Manchester City, Emmanuel Adebayor becomes even more expendable. And with the forward wanting a permanent move to Tottenham after a positive loan for the Spurs last season, City now seem ready to come to terms.
From Wayne Veysey of Goal.com:
"City are also confident that they will sell Adebayor to Tottenham for £4m by the end of the window and are in negotiations to offload [Roque] Santa Cruz as well.
"
Colin Young of the Daily Mail has also reported that the long-awaited permanent transfer to the Spurs is finally close to completion.
Adebayor notched 18 goals and 12 assists in 37 appearances for Tottenham last season, easily his best season since the Arsenal days. A permanent move to Tottenham suits both the player and the two clubs involved in this potential deal.
Luka Modric
25 of 34UPDATE: Tuesday, August 21 at 12:00 p.m. ET
"Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is
"
"Modric's representatives were in Madrid on Monday and believe they have brokered a compromise with £28m up front and the rest in add-ons.
They have arranged talks between Perez and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy by phone on Tuesday and are hoping to make a breakthrough at last.
"
Will this finally happen? Probably. Has the entire ordeal been annoying and seriously hampered Tottenham's ability to make other moves this summer? Most assuredly.
UPDATE: Sunday, August 19 at 10:00 a.m.
According to Matt Law of the Mirror, another suitor has entered the fray for Modric, who doesn't sound interested:
"Luka Modric is set to snub new interest from Chelsea to drive through his Real Madrid move this week.
The Blues have made a fresh enquiry for the £30 million Croatian star, but he is desperate to join the Spanish champions.
"
Let's be honest—Modric only has eyes for Madrid, and I don't see a move to Chelsea making a ton of sense for either he nor the club. If anything, Chelsea's rumored interest could have been drummed up by the Spurs as a negotiating ploy with Real Madrid.
----------END OF UPDATE----------
Congratulations, Luka Modric—with the Robin van Persie drama finally over, yours is now the longest-running transfer saga in Europe this summer.
Hooray for you!
It's been no secret this summer that Modric craves a move to Real Madrid. But finally—FINALLY—it looks as though a deal could go down and Modric could be headed to Spain.
From John Cross of the Mirror:
"Luka Modric is expected at the Bernabeu on Thursday to complete his £35million move from Spurs to Real Madrid.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has played hardball with Modric since the midfielder went AWOL a month ago to try to force his move to the Spanish champions and has been demanding a £40m fee.
But the breakthrough came when Real offered to pay more cash up front in a deal which could reach £35m with add-ons.
"
Well, we know it won't be Sahin. Modric's move looks like it will open the door for another trunk-load of Tottenham rumors. And if Alex Song actually does head to Barcelona from Arsenal, the two rivals could find themselves in a bidding war to improve their respective midfields.
Kaka
26 of 34Just when you thought Manchester United had made their big splash by signing Robin van Persie, out come rumors that the Red Devils are looking to bring Kaka to Old Trafford on a season-long loan.
"Kaka has been offered to Manchester United on a season-long loan as Real Madrid prepare for the arrival of Luka Modric.
Galatasaray and Kaka’s former club AC Milan have also registered their interest in the 2007 World Player of the Year, but United are the biggest draw for the Brazilian.
Sir Alex Ferguson is giving the 30-year-old serious consideration but has fears about his form and fitness after so many injuries.
"
File this one in the unlikely bin for now. Manchester United have plenty of options in the midfield, and enough of them (Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Michael Carrick) are older players. It's hard to see how Kaka would fit in with this Red Devils team, or whether he is worth his wages for the year.
But Sir Alex Ferguson is clearly all about doing whatever it takes to win this year, so don't completely disregard this rumor just yet.
Stevan Jovetic
27 of 34With concerns over the knee injury suffered by Sergio Aguero on Sunday, Manchester City now looks poised to add talented Fiorentina striker Stevan Jovetic.
From Wayne Veysey of Goal.com:
"Manchester City are in advanced talks to sign Stevan Jovetic from Fiorentina, Goal.com can reveal.
City have indicated to the Serie A club that they are willing to meet their £23.6million [€30m] valuation of the 22-year-old forward.
Sources have told Goal.com that negotiations between the clubs are progressing well and City are increasingly confident of capturing Jovetic before the end of the window.
"
According to Veysey, the signing of Jovetic would likely signal the imminent departure of Edin Dzeko and Emmanuel Adebayor (more on him on the next slide).
Besides, why should Manchester United get to have all the fun during this summer transfer window?
Javier Hernandez
28 of 34Well, this didn't take long. Just hours after Robin van Persie was bought from Arsenal, the rumors started flying that Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez might ask out of Manchester United's suddenly overflowing striker supply.
David McDonnell of the Mirror writes that a reverse move to Arsenal could be in store for the Little Pea:
"United striker Javier Hernandez, having dropped down the front-line pecking order at United with the arrival of van Persie, could move the other way to Arsenal.
Hernandez, who endured a difficult second season at United last term, is said to be frustrated at the inevitable lack of opportunities to start now van Persie has joined, amid unconfirmed reports he has told Ferguson he wants to leave.
"
While this swapper strike seems like pure speculation, two things remain certain: Hernandez just lost serious playing time for Manchester United with the RVP signing, and Arsenal needs to add another forward.
Stay tuned.
Robin Van Persie
29 of 34Update: Wednesday, Aug. 15 at 2:30 p.m. ET
"BREAKING: Man Utd agree £24m deal to sign Robin van Persie from Arsenal. 4-yr deal, terms & medical in next 48 hours #bbcfootball #afc #mufc
— David Ornstein (@bbcsport_david) August 15, 2012"
Arsenal's official site confirmed the report.
At this point, it's hard to imagine Manchester United won't be the favorites to win the EPL title this season. In Wayne Rooney and van Persie, they now have two of the most dangerous goal-scorers in the league .
Update: Wednesday, Aug. 15 at 11:30 a.m. ET
According to John Cross of the Mirror, Manchester United and Arsenal are closing to striking a deal for the Dutch striker:
"The Mirror can reveal the two clubs spent Tuesday night talking about a deal which could now be pushed through before the Premier League kick-off this weekend.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is likely to settle on a fee of just above £20m as United prepare to increase their offer for the Dutch forward, who is currently on international duty but won't be in the starting line-up when Holland play Belgium on Wednesday night.
"
Honestly, I think even Gunners' fans just want this situation to be over. While selling RVP to a league rival like Manchester United—who would surely be EPL favorites with van Persie on the squad—isn't ideal, at least the ordeal would be over.
----------END OF UPDATE----------
Update: Tuesday, Aug. 14 at 6:27 p.m. ET
Information regarding Van Persie's possible destination continues to surface with Telegraph reporter Jeremy Wilson stating that "United indicated that they were ready to improve their initial bid of around £12 million, which was rejected, and, while the two clubs remain apart in their valuations, they were locked in talks on Tuesday night."
Wilson's report then goes on to say that United are "understood to be Van Persie's preferred destination" but that United is "reluctant to spend more than £15 million on someone who is 29 and has a mixed injury record."
Also reiterated is the fact that the Gunners want, at least, £20 million for their dynamic goal-scorer.
Stay tuned as this situation continues to develop.

Update: Tuesday, Aug. 14 at 10:30 a.m. ET
Sami Mokbel of the Daily Mail reports Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has talked directly with Arsene Wenger with hopes of getting some type of resolution in the Van Persie talks. The two sides continue to work on the details.

You had to know that one of Arsenal's most prized possessions, Robin van Persie, would be on this list, as he has been one of the most talked-about players throughout the transfer window process.
The only thing that we know for sure is that Van Persie isn't too keen on returning to play for the Gunners once his contract is up at the end of the season, according to his official website.
According to The Telegraph, Manchester United, Juventus and Manchester City are all interested in providing financial compensation for the star striker.
Per the report, City's Roberto Mancini does not believe that his team will be able to swing a deal to bring in RVP.
As you might expect, van Persie's prospective destination is unknown, but you can bet that the Gunners won't be looking to lose their biggest asset without making some money.
Alex Song
30 of 34UPDATE: Sunday, August 19 at 10:00 a.m.
Alex Song is headed to Barca, as the team's official Twitter account revealed on Saturday (via ESPN):
"Their official Twitter account read: "FC Barcelona has agreed a deal with Arsenal FC for the transfer of Alex Song to the Camp Nou.
"Song will sign for the next five seasons with a release clause of €80 million. On Monday he'll have a medical and then join the rest of the squad for the official team presentation at the Gamper."
"
Another August, another pair of top players leaving Arsenal. How much longer cant the Gunners go on conceding ammunition in the arms race?
UPDATE: Wednesday, Aug. 15 at 11:30 a.m. ET
From Dermot Corrigan of ESPN:
"Daily papers Sport and Mundo Deportivo claim that Barcelona's sports vice-president Josep Maria Bartomeu and director of football Raul Sanllehi were in London on Tuesday to negotiate the deal, and it could be finalised within hours.
The reports claim Arsenal have already turned down an initial €15 million bid from the Catalans and are holding out for over €20 million, but a deal should be agreed for €18 - €19 million. The idea of a Barca player such as Ibrahim Afellay or Cristian Tello moving to the Emirates on loan in part-exchange has been discounted.
"
This one continues to confound—why would Arsenal get rid of one of its most improved players over the years and the only holding mid they have healthy?—but this rumor has gained serious steam over the past couple of days.
----------END OF UPDATE----------
Robin van Persie's future isn't the only thing in question for Arsenal as the August 31 transfer deadline rapidly approaches as Alex Song also appears to be the target for, at least, one of the world's preeminent clubs.
The Daily Mail reports that Barcelona is prepared to offer a hefty sum for Song's services:
"Barcelona are ready to pay £17million for Arsenal's Alex Song despite the player admitting he is happy in north London.
"
However, that report can't be taken as gospel. The Sun's Antony Kastrinakis claims that Arsene Wenger will not sell his defensive midfielder:
"“There’s nothing going on with Song. There’s nothing in that. Song has three years contract he’s not in the same situation as Robin Van Persie. In Spain the newspapers are not really serious. We’ve had the experience of that."
"
Despite the rumored offer coming from Barcelona, Song told Sky Sports that he is happy with his current club on Monday:
""I am not going to lie if I said there is no interest but I am at Arsenal
"and I am happy at Arsenal. Barcelona are the best team in the world, and speculation will always continue until the window closes."
The situation could change, but Sky Sports' report does mention a possible extension being discussed between Song and the Gunners. Arsenal may need Song now more than ever with long-time target Yann M'Vila being pursued heavily by Tottenham according to The Daily Mail.
Keep an eye out for more updates concerning Arsenal's 24-year-old holding midfielder.
Daniel Agger
31 of 34Update: Wednesday, Aug. 15 at 11:30 a.m. ET
While Agger has previously said he couldn't imagine playing for another team in England, he clearly could see himself in a Barcelona uniform. From Edjer Akbal of Sky Sports:
"But in a latest twist, the £5.8million January 2006 signing from Brondby has now surprisingly admitted he would find it hard to say no to Barcelona.
Agger is quoted as saying by Ekstra Bladet: "Playing for Barcelona would be a huge accomplishment. They have the best team in the world so that is a given.
"But I am very happy here (Liverpool). I feel that I have a good place in the club and that I have a lot of influence on the pitch."
"
Will he stay or will he go now? It sounds to me like Agger wants a contract extension to stay at Anfield, but given his comment, I have a feeling he'll be dangled until the August 31st transfer deadline.
----------END OF UPDATE----------
Update: Tuesday, Aug. 14 at 10:20 a.m. ET
Liverpool has begun researching replacement options just in case Agger does get moved before the window closes, according to David McDonnell of the Daily Mirror. He reports the top choice right now is Ashley Williams of Swansea City, manager Brendan Rodgers' former club.
-----End of update-----
The Liverpool defenseman has been the subject of a plethora of gossip and rumour in recent weeks, as the Danish international has drawn the attention of defending EPL champs Manchester City after his strong play in Euro 2012.
City have reportedly already bid £12 million, but the Reds quickly rejected that lowball offer for their star defender. While the Blues are certainly still interested, recent reports indicate that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has no interest in selling off the 27-year-old defender.
According to a goal.com report, Rodgers is of the mindset that Anfield would be best served hanging onto the talented central midfielder rather than selling him off.
""There’s nothing new to add. You can see tonight he’s important to me and how I like to play,” Rodgers told reporters.
"
"I like to have a playmaker in behind and Daniel, this is his game, building from behind, stepping in with the ball and making passes. For me there’s no update because we don’t want to sell him.
Given Liverpool's defensive struggles and lapses with Agger in the lineup, it's completely understandable why Rodgers is extremely hesitant to sell him. Without a surefire viable replacement lined up, and given their lack of defensive depth, don't be surprised to see the Reds hang onto the talented Dane for the time being. Their defense needs all the help it can get, and Agger fits the bill perfectly.
Joe Allen
32 of 34Brendan Rodgers announced on Thursday that he expected Liverpool to land Swansea City midfielder Joe Allen for £15 million, according to ESPN.
Allen, who posted four goals and two assists in 31 starts for Swansea last season, was managed by Rodgers in the past at Liberty Stadium.
The 22-year-old has exhibited good tackling ability, speed and vision so far in his career.
Lucas Moura
33 of 34UPDATE: Wednesday, August 8 at 1:35 p.m. ET by Timothy Rapp
The busy and expensive offseason for Paris Saint-Germain continues, as they have officially landed Lucas Moura in a transfer. From the official website of PSG:
"Paris Saint-Germain and São Paulo FC have reached today an agreement for the definitive transfer of Lucas Rodriguez Moura Da Silva.
The player and Paris Saint-Germain have also signed an agreement from January 2013 to July 2017. The player will join Paris Saint-Germain and his new teammates in January 2013 for the second half of the season 2012/2013.
"
It's important to reiterate that Lucas won't be joining the side until January, seemingly allowing him to continue with São Paulo FC this season before moving on.
It's also important to reiterate that PSG have been huge spenders this summer, adding Lucas to a hual that includes Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic from AC Milan and Ezequiel Lavezzi from Napoli. Not too shabby.
----------END OF UPDATE----------
The soon to be 20-year-old Sao Paulo star is on the verge of being sent across the Atlantic Ocean to play for one of the world's most prestigious football clubs.
According to The Telegraph, Manchester United are ready to fork over £30 million to his club for his services. The report claims that the two sides hope the deal will come to fruition within the next 48 hours.
However, a contradictory ESPN report writes that Inter Milan's president Massimo Moratti claims Paris Saint-Germain are willing to pay €45 million for one of the top commodities on the international market.
It seems that Moura will definitely be donning a new kit next season, but it will take some time for us to find out where.
Neymar
34 of 34Update: Tuesday, Aug. 14 at 10:45 a.m. ET
Although there are no shortage of teams that would be interested in Neymar, Santos' president continues to say the rising superstar won't be leaving the team. ESPN reports Luis Alvaro is ready to maintain control of the sensation until his contract runs out in 2014.
He calls Neymar "priceless" and it's hard to argue with him given the striker's recent performance.
----End of update-----
Talks regarding Santos star and Brazilian international Neymar have died down a bit during the 2012 London Olympics, but clubs haven't abandoned the prospect of acquiring the 20-year-old phenom.
His performance in London has certainly turned some heads, but it remains to be seen whether he will change clubs this offseason.
According to ESPN Soccernet, Neymar won't be going anywhere:
"Persistent rumours have suggested that Neymar, currently starring at the Olympics, has already agreed to join Barcelona by next summer at the latest. However, [Santos president Luis Alvaro de Oliveira] Ribeiro predicted that the £60 million-rated player would not leave Santos before his contract ends in two years time.
"
Ribeiro seems to be 100 percent confident that he won't have to part with his top player, but £60 million is a lot of money to turn down for anybody.
According to Fox Sports, Barcelona have placed a down payment to solidify the future acquisition, but the transfer wouldn't come until the 2013-14 season.
