Gabby Douglas Fails to Medal in 2012 Olympic Women's Gymnastics Balance Beam
After becoming the first American gymnast to win gold in the team and individual all-around events in the Summer Olympics, Gabby Douglas has continued her dramatic slide.
After an uncharacteristic slip off the balance beam, Douglas failed to medal in the women’s balance beam finals, posting a score of 13.633 and finishing second to last.
| Place | Name | Country | Score |
| 1 | Deng Linlin | China | 15.6 |
| 2 | Sui Lu | China | 15.5 |
| 3 | Aly Raisman | USA | 15.066 |
| 4 | Catalina Ponor | Romania | 15.066 |
| 5 | Ksenia Afanasyeva | Russia | 14.583 |
| 6 | Larisa Iordache | Romania | 14.2 |
| 7 | Gabby Douglas | USA | 13.633 |
| 8 | Viktoria Komova | Russia | 13.166 |
This comes on the heels of Douglas’ poor performance in the uneven bars finals, in which she placed eighth out of eight competitors.
Despite tying with Russian star Viktoria Komova with a 15.266 in qualification for the beam, the 16-year-old from Virginia Beach could not harness that same gracefulness on Tuesday morning.
It's hard to fathom considering Douglas earned the second-best score during the event in the team finals and received top honors on the apparatus in the individual all-around.
According to USAgym.com, the beam is Douglas’ favorite event, but it may not be much longer after this disappointment.
She was a favorite going into the finals and truly should have been on the podium, but eventually was doomed by the fall.
It seemed that the pressure finally got to the young woman, although she still will be remembered as one of the greatest gymnasts ever and will always be known as the first to earn the two top honors in the same Olympic Games.
Despite failing to medal, USA fans will forever remember Douglas for her brilliant performances earlier in the 2012 Olympic Games. She will head back to the States not just an Olympic gold medalist, but an inspiration and hero.
