Women's Olympic Soccer 2012: Why Alex Morgan Is Now Team USA's Biggest Star
The recent victory of the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) over Canada was one of the historical events of 2012. Alex Morgan emerged as one of the shining stars of the USWNT during that time.
The are many reasons why but I've decided to discuss the important ones.
The achievements of Ms. Morgan will be discussed in descending order.
The achievements of Ms. Morgan in the 2012 Summer Olympics are astounding. The USWNT was within the jaws of defeat with Christine Sinclair of Canada increasing the tempo with her goals.
The result was a tie between the USWNT and Canada with three goals each. The last goal of the U.S. versus Canada match was scored by Ms. Morgan in the 123rd minute.
Ms. Morgan broke the tie in the match between the two nations. The end result was a victory for the USWNT against Canada, which was not her only achievement.
Ms. Morgan also established herself in the USWNT match against New Zealand. She assisted Abby Wambach in scoring the first goal of the match within 27 minutes.
The only problem in the New Zealand match was when Ms. Morgan’s knee crashed into Jenny Bindon’s (New Zealand) face. Regardless, Ms. Morgan was a success against New Zealand.
Ms. Morgan played a role in the match between the USWNT and North Korea. She assisted Ms. Wambach in scoring the only goal of the match within 25 minutes.
During the match against Colombia, Ms. Morgan assisted Megan Rapinoe in scoring the first goal.
Her biggest moment was in the USWNT's game against France on July 25, 2012.
It appeared that the USA would lose against France after falling behind early by two goals. In the end, the USWNT equalized but it was Ms. Morgan that gave the team the extra two goals to save the match.
2012 Success In Football
According to the US Soccer website, Ms. Morgan started 2012 scoring goals with intensity. Between the months of January and May 2012, she managed to score 14 goals within a stretch of 12 matches.
Activities Outside of the USWNT
Ms. Morgan participated in activities that promoted the USWNT outside of the sport. She participated with Hope Solo and Abby Wambach in the Chicago Marathon to help the charity of her choice.
She also posed in the 2012 SI Swimsuit issue using body paint. It is these activities outside the USWNT that promote the club and contributes to her career as an emerging star.
Conclusion
It remains to be seen whether the USWNT can defeat Japan. Alex Morgan is destined to be another great historic figure and an inspiration to future generations of the USWNT.
