Danell Leyva Will Finally Bring Home Gold on Parallel Bars
At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, the United States finished second to China in the gymnastics medal count. In fact, the Americans haven't finished atop the gymnastics medal count in recent memory.
This year, the American gymnasts compete to undo this trend and solidify a new international reputation as the world's best gymnastics team.
Danell Leyva is at the center of this effort. This year, more than ever, he must and will take home the gold in parallel bars.
Leyva, a Cuban-American with a relatively awkward gymnastics body, is outstanding on the parallel bars. He recently won a bronze medal in the men's all-around.
Leyva is the defending world champion and is one of a handful of gymnasts to score a legendary 16.0 this year. He is widely known for his blemish-free routines and consistency.
However, this in no way means a cake walk on the parallel bars. Leyva is actually a reserve in the event, but will have an excellent chance if he can get into the main field.
Additionally, competition will be more fierce than ever. Leyva must go up against Feng Zhe of China, the 2010 world champion who is known for executing extremely difficult routines. Marcel Nguyen of Germany and Chenglong Zheng of China are also contenders to look out for.
This year, however, is Leyva's year. Parallel bars is arguably his best event, and Leyva has the competitive spirit, mental composure, and physical gifts to bring home the gold.
The final will be played on the morning of August 7 at 2:00 PM London time.
