Olympics: Why Alex Morgan Will Lead the Next Generation of Beauty and Athletics

David LevinJun 7, 2018

While I understand the importance of having a “face” to represent this generation of female and male athletics, I am still an “old school” sort who worries about the sports first and the players who play them second.

So, when I look at the current roster of Olympic stars and see their beauty as well as grace, I am fully aware of the fact that it does not hurt to not only be talented, but to beautiful and talented as well.

Alex Morgan probably fits in this category.

As a member of the United States Women’s Soccer Team, and having appeared in fashion magazines, ESPN the Magazine and hundreds of entertainment spreads, there is no doubt that Morgan will not only be one of the faces of U.S. Women’s Soccer heading into the 2016 Summer Games.

And this is with good reason.

Right now, women’s soccer is red hot. It always is around this time of year, and after seeing the likes of Mia Hamm, Brandy Chastain and Hope Solo all use their celebrity to further the cause of the American female hopefuls, it is evident that Morgan can use her looks to further cause as well.

While the United States may need her legs to score goals for the Olympic team to advance, Morgan has already won individually because there are girls out there in television land who see her and want to be like her. That, too, is a win-win for U.S. women’s soccer.

So far, Morgan has proven she is all business on the field. Morgan scored two goals against France, assisted on a Megan Rapinoe goal against Colombia and assisted on Abby Wambach's goal against North Korea. Ironically, it the younger Morgan helping the undisputed veteran leader of this team to help Team U.S.A. advance.

Look for more of that to happen. Morgan again provided the assist for Wambach's opening goal in a 2-0 win over New Zealand in the quarterfinals.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the 23-year-old and her career once she returns from London and how endorsements will come her way. She has, in my opinion, an obligation to help with the womens' cause.

Mia Hamm started it, and players like Brandy Chastain, Michelle Akers, Hope Solo and Wambach have continued it. Now, it’s on to the next generation.

And with the advent of social media, marketing, entertainment and the need to look good and play like a champion, Morgan could be the new poster child for a generation look as the pretty girl on the block to be the best she can be on and off the field.
