Boise State Football: Who's in and Who's out at Bronco Fall Camp
Boise State hadn't even started fall camp when the announcement was made. Two players that were poised to be prominent players on this year's squad are not going to appear in the season opener against Michigan State.
In fact, one of those players will miss the first four games, while the other is forced to end his college football career. It is certainly not the kind of news Chris Petersen wanted to start the year off with, but we have seen coach Pete handle this kind of adversity before.
Will these losses have a huge impact on the season opener? How about the entire season?
Well, let's look at that and some other key losses and gains that have been announced going into fall practice.
Who's in and who's out of the Boise State fall camp 2012?
Out: Cory Yriarte
1 of 6As you might have already learned, sixth-year senior Cory Yriarte will miss the entire season with a devastating knee injury that took place in summer conditioning, according to Chadd Cripe of the Idaho Statesman.
The worst part is that, not only will Cory miss the season, but this has effectively ended his college football career. Yriarte had already suffered two seasons missed because of an ACL tear, and he was granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA for this year.
Cory started at center for the Broncos eight times last season, and he figured to be a veteran leader among a very seasoned offensive line this season. Now, the Broncos are adjusting, but you know a player like Yriarte will be missed.
Still, the Idaho Statesman is reporting that three players will have time at center as the camp commences. Senior Joe Kellogg, junior Spencer Gerke and redshirt freshman Marcus Henry will rotate at the position.
In the same article written by Chadd Cripe, offensive line coach Chris Strausser expressed one of the biggest issues with the injury—that being depth.
"Although he didn't go through spring ball, he’s the guy we were counting on. … We have a bunch of guys inside who have had some experience at center. We just need to build that depth up.
"
The Broncos have several veteran offensive lineman, so the adjustment will be painful, but it is more than doable. However, the depth that Boise State felt they had on the O-line just got a little less deep and they cannot afford more injuries.
In: Mario Yakoo
2 of 6Offensive lineman Mario Yakoo will be in fall camp after all. It was thought by many that Yakoo would be grayshirted. However, with the loss of Yriarte, and with Yakoo's size, it is probably best to get him in the rotation.
Yakoo is 6'4", 320 lbs. and has lots of upside. His downside is only his age. At 17 years old, he will be one of the youngest players out there. But, since he looks like two 17 year olds combined, nobody will probably care about his lack of years.
Yakoo was recruited by several schools out of high school including Air Force, Arizona and UCLA, and for good reason. His senior year he was awarded All-Grossmont League First Team and first-team All-CIF San Diego County
Look for Yakoo to benefit greatly from playing with this veteran line in 2012.
Out: Geraldo Boldewijn
3 of 6Another player that BSU is going to miss as it starts the season is Geraldo Boldewijn. This year, just like last year, Boldewijn will miss the first four games of the season because of impermissible benefits from his high school host family, according to ESPN.
Boldewijn is from Amsterdam, but came to the United States to play high school football. He lived with a host family, but host families have different restrictions than your average family. Once again, the host family and Boldewijn have learned the hard way.
However, and this is a big however, even though Boldewijn is poised to be a strong weapon as a wide receiver for the Broncos this season, wide receiver is the deepest position on the roster. So, even though it hurts, it doesn't do that much to diminish a potent receiving core.
Look for players like Troy Ware and Aaron Burks to step up.
In: Deon'tae Florence
4 of 6Another scholarship recruit will be in camp for Boise State. Cornerback Deon'tae Florence, a junior college transfer from College of the Desert in Palm Desert, California will give a little more depth to an outstanding defensive secondary.
Check out this Bleacher Report article that was featured back in May when the offer was announced.
Florence is a fast player that makes good decisions. If you watch some of his highlights you may quickly realize that Boise State found a hidden gem.
Florance had offers from Troy and Georgia Southern according to Scout.com, but he chose Boise State, and Bronco fans should be happy about that.
Out: Jake Van Ginkel
5 of 6Jake Van Ginkel had a great spring game kicking for the Broncos, and many fans thought he had the inside track to the starting spot.
However, Van Ginkel won't even be in the Broncos' fall camp. No word yet why, but it was announced via the Idaho Statesman that the redshirt freshman wouldn't join the team until camp was over.
Van Ginkel also missed the Vegas Bowl last season, and you have to wonder if the two things are related? Maybe not, but this is not the kind of thing Bronco fans were hoping for in the kicking game.
There will be no shortage, however, of kickers in the BSU fall camp. Senior Michael Frisina, sophomore Dan Goodale and true freshman Sean Wale will be battling for the kicking job.
In: A Whole Bunch of Others
6 of 6Besides all of the scholarship players form the 2012 recruiting class, several other new faces have arrived on campus at BSU as well. Walk-ons, and there are several, have made their way to the Boise State 2012 fall camp.
Among the group are some local Idaho players.
Cornerback Trey Corta from Homedale High School is in camp. He played some quarterback and defensive back for his hometown Trojans. Jackson Reed a wide receiver from Timberline High School in Boise is in camp as is Kellen Buhr from Capitol High School in Boise and Brennyn Dunn from Preston High School in Preston, Idaho.
Cole Vally Christian High School will also be represented as Avery Westendorf will be in camp too.
Other walk-ons include a couple of running backs in Jamel Hart and Charles Bertoli out of California, Taylor Pope a wide receiver from the Golden State and offensive lineman Shane Wickes out of Reno, Nevada.
Some interesting junior college transfer players will also be seen. According to the Idaho Statesman, snapper Jake Holsteen out of Ellsworth Community College and snapper Kevin Keane out of Ohio Wesleyan will be battling it out.
