Top Athletes

Sanya Richards-Ross

Track and field action will finally kick off on Friday, and Richards-Ross is one of the best names you will see.

She will begin her qualifying runs for the 400-meter race, and she will have a definite goal in mind. In Beijing in 2008 she was forced to settle for a bronze medal. This year she will try to improve on that mark.

Giving an elite athlete motivation is a dangerous thing. Richards-Ross will try and make up for her decisive stumble four years ago with a big performance in London.

You're going to want to watch her chase her gold medal dreams.

Michael Phelps

Phelps chases his 21st medal in the 100-meter butterfly finals on Friday. He's looking to add to his already-historic achievement with another gold medal.

He hasn't been as dominant in London, but Phelps is still a force of nature in the water. He's an unbelievable talent, and very few swimmers have what it takes to beat him. His Olympic career is winding down so expect him to race this with some urgency.

All eyes are on Phelps anytime he takes to the water. Swimming fans should do their best to catch him in action while they still can. They may never see another athlete like him.

Ralf Schumann

I'll throw a bit of a wildcard at you here. Schumann is Germany's top shooter, and he will be going for his sixth career Olympic medal on Friday.

Schumann will have competition from Team USA's Keith Sanderson, but he's got momentum in his favor. Sanderson couldn't even qualify for the final competition in 2008, and Schumann has tasted more success overall.

Shooting events are off the beaten path, even for Olympic sports, but their ability is staggering. Anyone can appreciate the precise accuracy displayed by these deadeye marksman.
