Women's Olympics Gymnastics 2012: Breaking Down Women's All-Around Competition

Chris StephensJun 5, 2018

The women's gymnastics individual all-around competition is complete, and the U.S. has won its third straight gold medal as Gabrielle Douglas held off Russia's Viktoria Komova to win the gold medal.

Throughout the competition, the gold was between Douglas and Komova, as they showed they were the two best gymnasts in the world.

Third place was also interesting, as Russia's Aliya Mustafina and Aly Raisman of the U.S. tied. Mustafina was given the bronze on a tiebreaker rule, as outlined in a story by the Associated Press,

"

...the lowest apparatus score will be dropped and the remaining scores added. If that doesn't break the tie, additional apparatus scores will be dropped, one at a time, until there is a winner. If no winner emerges, the tie stands.

"

Overall, the all-around was exciting, and would've been even more so had the best 24 gymnasts been able to compete, without eliminating gymnasts who were ranked third from their country.

Here's a breakdown of the women's individual all-around, looking at how the top four fared in each event.

Gold: Gabrielle Douglas, USA

1 of 4

The Flying Squirrel was simply amazing again.

Each time out, she's gotten better and better, ultimately giving her best effort at the biggest moment.

Douglas ranked first on vault (15.966) and balance beam (15.500). Other than Raisman, Douglas scored 0.5 better on the vault than anyone else, although she barely squeezed out the win on beam.

On uneven bars, she was third, scoring 15.733, only 0.233 points behind Komova.

On the floor exercise, she finished fourth (15.033), scoring 0.067 less than Komova.

When you look at the numbers, Douglas was barely behind Komova in two events, but dominated in the vault, which propelled her to gold.

Now, the question is: Will she make another run at it in Rio?

Silver: Viktoria Komova

2 of 4

Komova was equally as good as Douglas in the individual all-around.

However, the vault (where both started) was where Komova lost it, as she scored a 15.466 (third overall) to start the event.

Throughout the rest of the final, Komova couldn't make up that half of a point.

She scored a 15.966 on bars (second), 15.441 on beam (second) and 15.100 (third) on floor.

At that point, as Komova watched Douglas nail her floor routine, she had to know she was going to be relegated to the silver.

Oh well, she still gave fans an exciting competition to watch.

Bronze: Aliya Mustafina

3 of 4

Mustafina was in contention for the gold through the first two rotations, as she scored a 15.233 on vault (fifth) and 16.100 on bars (first).

The beam was next, where Mustafina scored a 13.633 (18th), seriously hurting her chances to take home a medal.

Luckily, she finished the floor with a 14.600 (sixth), and was able to take the tiebreaker for the bronze.

What helped her win the tiebreaker is her beam score was dropped and her other three apparatus scores were added up, which equaled more than Raisman.

Her highest scoring routines added up to 45.933, while Raisman's added up to 45.366.

Fourth: Aly Raisman

4 of 4

Raisman definitely has to be disappointed to finish fourth because of a tiebreaker, but she should still be proud of the fact that she came out of nowhere, upset Jordyn Wieber to make the final and finished where she did.

She turned a lot of heads during the competition and will long be remembered for the upset she pulled in qualifications.

Raisman started out well on vault, scoring a 15.900 (second overall), following that up with a 14.333 on bars (ninth). The beam wasn't much better with a 14.200 (10th), but she did finish strong on the floor exercise, scoring a 15.133 (second).

Even though she finished fourth, I think former Olmypian Shawn Johnson said it best:

"

Aly come in 3. And earned her bronze medal.... I don't care what they say. So proud. #OlympicsTODAY
