Olympic Medal Count 2012: USA's Best Chances to Win Gold on Day 6

Austin GreenJun 5, 2018

The United States currently trails China in total medals (30-29) and golds (17-12), but they will have some prime opportunities to surpass the Chinese on Day Six of the 2012 London Olympics.

Thursday looks to be one of the most dramatic days of the entire Games, as the biggest stars from the early competitions will be in action. The day also has the potential to be completely dominated by the Americans.

From the London Aquatics Centre to North Greenwich Village, look for the Americans to take home the gold in the following events.

Men's Swimming: 200-Meter Individual Medley

Start Time: 3:19 p.m. ET

The USA boasts the two best swimmers in the world, Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps, both of whom happen to specialize in this event.

Phelps won gold in the 200 IM in Beijing, finishing in a world-record time of 1:54.23. Lochte would go on to break that record two years later, posting a ridiculous 1:54.00 on his way to the gold at the 2011 World Championships.

Both also performed exceptionally in the qualifying rounds, with Lochte finishing first and Phelps third.

They will have plenty of competition from the likes of Thiago Pereira, Laszlo Cseh and Kosuke Hagino, but you have to think one of the Americans will be standing at the top of the podium on Thursday.

Women's Gymnastics: Individual All-Around

Start Time: 11:30 a.m. ET

Another event where the USA has two elite competitors, look for the Americans to dominate in the women's individual all-around event.

Fresh off their gold medal performance in the team competition, Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman are two of the top-three contenders for the gold on Thurdsay. Both were excellent in qualifying, with Raisman scoring a 60.391 and Douglas right behind her with a 60.265.

They will be seriously challenged by Viktoria Komova of Russia, but if Komova stumbles like she did in the team event, the top-two podium spots will belong to the red, white and blue.

Women's Swimming: 100-Meter Freestyle

Start Time: 3:37 p.m. ET

Teen phenom Missy Franklin will look to add to her impressive 2012 campaign by claiming gold in the 100-meter freestyle.

The 17-year-old Colorado native has already racked up two golds and a bronze in London, and after qualifying third in the 100 free, she looks primed to reach the podium yet again.

Franklin will be pushed by Melanie Schlanger of Australia and Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands, but if she swims to her full potential, Franklin could definitely bring home the gold.
