Olympic Swimming 2012: Michael Phelps Should Return in 2016
Michael Phelps now has something to prove and a reason to return to the pool in 2016.
It was easy for him to consider retirement following the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing when he won eight gold medals. He set the world or Olympic record in every single event. There was no longer a challenge, other than becoming the most decorated athlete in the history of the Olympic Games.
Now that he has accomplished that feat, is there anything else left for him to prove? I would say yes.
Phelps' performances so far in the 2012 Olympics Games might leave him hungry to continue to compete. His fourth-place finish in the 400-meter individual medley was the first time he failed to medal in an event since 2000.
That can't sit well with Phelps, who is an ultimate competitor.
Even though Phelps has not made a hint at any chance of returning in 2016, it has to be an option somewhere in his head. If his performance in London would've been as dominant as it was in Beijing, I assume the thought of retiring would be a lot easier.
If he does shock the world and return, would he compete in all of the events on his schedule this year? Most likely not. However, the greatest Olympic swimmer ever may decide to return for one or two events in Rio just to prove he can be medal in four Olympic Games and add to his impressive resume.
