Rob Bolden: Former Penn State QB Will Reportedly Transfer to LSU
Former Penn State quarterback Rob Bolden is taking his talents to LSU.
The news comes from ESPN.com:
"Former Penn State quarterback Rob Bolden has told LSU coaches he will report to the Tigers' practice Wednesday, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported Tuesday, citing an anonymous source close to the situation.
"
The sophomore out of Orchard Lake, Mich., follows Silas Redd as the latest player to leave Penn State because of the NCAA sanctions, although others are still expected follow.
Let's take a look at this newest development.
What It Means
LSU gets a much-needed quarterback. Currently on the roster for the Tigers are Zach Mettenberger, who has thrown 11 passes in his career, and Stephen Rivers and Jerrard Randall, neither of whom have taken a snap in college.
Bolden, who became the first true freshman Penn State quarterback to start a season opener in 100 years in 2010 and has attempted over 300 passes in his career, gives the Tigers much-needed depth.
Still, he hasn't quite lived up to his potential. In two seasons with Penn State, the 6'3" gunslinger threw for just seven touchdowns and 14 interceptions and didn't make much of an impact on the ground.
What Happens Next?
Obviously, Mettenberger, who knows the offense and the system, will still be entrenched as the starter, but Bolden is an intriguing candidate.
Coming out of high school, he was a 4-star recruit and Rivals rated him as the second-best dual-threat QB in the nation, comparing him to Jordan Jefferson, who Tigers fans might know a little bit about.
At the very least, he could potentially play the Jefferson role off the bench: inconsistent arm, but brings a change of pace and style.
As noted earlier, Bolden hasn't quite played like many were expecting, but he has a laser arm and a menacing body that makes him a good candidate to take off and run.
If a new environment is what he needed (Bolden originally wanted to transfer out of Happy Valley but wasn't granted release from his scholarship by Joe Paterno), this could turn out to be a steal for LSU.
Additionally, be on the lookout for more possible Penn State transfers. Bolden could just be one of many dominoes to fall.
