Olympic Results 2012: Floundering Stars Who'll Rebound for Big Performances

Richard LangfordJun 7, 2018

Mired in underperformance, the following three stars will rebound to turn in medal-winning performances and leave the 2012 Olympics as a success.

This is good news for this trio, as the impression made at the Olympics follows around athletes for a lifetime, and no one wants failure on this kind of stage hanging over their heads for all eternity.

This will make for great storylines, and grand excitement in the following events.

Danell Leyva, USA, Gymnastics

At the end of qualifying, everything was looking great for Danell Leyva. He had the highest all-around score and his team had the highest team score. Then the team competition rolled around, and the U.S. stumbled, and Leyva was a big reason why.

He was awful on the pommel horse, his worst event, and he was bad on the parallel bars, his best event.

His performance in the team competition left him in tears. His performance in the all-around will leave him satisfied.

Leyva is far too talented and consistent to turn in another sub-par performance. He will be right in the mix for a gold in the all-around, but thanks to the next guy, he will come up just short and leave with a silver.

Kohei Uchimura, Japan, Gymnastics

Uchimura has been absolutely dominating the world gymnastics scene. He is the reigning world champion and he is now the only male gymnast to win that title three times.

So it has been a bit of a shock to see him struggling. He performed below his lofty standards in qualifying, and his terrible showing on the pommel horse in the team competition almost cost his team a medal, until his score was revised after an appeal.

This trend will not continue. We are talking about an athlete that knows how to perform on the biggest stages and has the talent to pull it off.

Uchimura will be back to his near-flawless self and win the all-around gold.

Ryan Lochte, USA, Swimming

Ryan Lochte's Olympics got off to a great start when he took the gold in the 400-meter individual medley, but that glory was short lived.

The following day, he was overtaken on the anchor leg of the 4x100-meter freestyle relay, which relegated the U.S. to a silver. He then followed that up by failing to make a podium appearance in the 200-meter freestyle.

However, Lochte looked good in the Americans' 4x200-meter freestyle gold-medal effort, and he still has two events left—one which will net him another gold.

Lochte will not be beat in the 200-meter individual medley. He has proven himself as the world's best medley swimmer, and he will cement that status with a win in the 200.
