Olympic Tennis 2012 Results: Day 4 Scores, Analysis & More

Ben ChodosJun 2, 2018

The tennis tournament at the 2012 London Olympics is one day closer to its conclusion and Day 4 offered plenty of drama.

The legendary grass courts at Wimbledon are hosting the world’s best players for the second time this summer, and the historic grounds have seemingly pushed the competition to another level. Those still alive are now in the third round of the tournament, and will be playing their next match to determine who reaches the quarterfinals.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Milos Raonic provided the most thrilling contest of the day, with Tsonga taking more time to beat his opponent than any player ever has at the Olympics.

The Frenchman—ranked fifth in the world—won the match 6-3, 3-6, 25-23. The third set by itself was longer than any game played in London so far, as noted by Yahoo Sports’ Chris Chase.

Other notable men to compete were Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic.

Both players displayed dominant performances. Djokovic took care of American Andy Roddick by scores of 6-2, 6-1, while Murray defeated Finland’s Jarkko Nieminem 6-2, 6-4.

Tsonga’s epic win earned him a third-round match against Spain’s Feliciano Lopez. Murray will take on Cyprus’ Marcos Baghdadtis, and Djokovic will face Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt.

For the women, Maria Sharapova’s presence on the court highlighted the day, while Victoria Azarenka, Venus Williams and Angelique Kerber were all in action. None of these big names showed any vulnerability heading into the third round.

Great Britain’s Laura Robson put up an inspired performance for the hometown crowd against Sharapova, but the world’s third-ranked player still won 7-6, 6-3.

World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka looks like a serious threat to earn a gold medal for Berlarus and dominated Spain’s Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-1, 6-2.

Williams also impressed with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Canada’s Aleksandra Wozniack, and Kerber justified her No. 7 ranking with a 6-1, 6-1 rout of Timea Babos.

Kerber and Williams will face each other with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line. The two players also played each other today when Williams and her sister Serena defeated Kerber and Sabine Lisicki 6-2, 5-7 in the doubles competition.

Sharapova is matched up with Lisicki and Azarenka will take on Russia’s Nadia Petrova.
