Women's Olympic Gymnastics 2012: All-Around Next for Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas

Emily BayciJul 31, 2012

The all-around is going to be a tough fight for Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas. They are going to be happy after coming off the team gold while the Russian women are seeking revenge.

Douglas and Raisman have the potential to go 1-2 which would help any disbelievers realize that America is now a gymnastics powerhouse.

Team USA needs to keep winning gold medals. It's a long shot, but they have the potential at a gold medal sweep; and the all-around is the second step.

Can the U.S. women really have another perfect day after doing so well on Sunday and Tuesday?

Yes they can. Gold is in their blood, and they have proven that they can dominate on the international stage.

It’s not going to be easy for the Americans. The Russians are going to be looking for revenge after what I am going to dub "The Russian Floor Debacle of 2012."

If Viktoria Komova performs the same way she did Sunday morning, she could easily win the all-around title. I think she will do even better than that because she is fueled by Tuesday’s failure.

Her teammate Aliya Mustafina is the most recent world all-around champion in the final; and although we haven’t seen anything special out of her, you can’t count her out. She has no major weaknesses which means she can capitalize on the other gymnasts' mistakes.

There was so much doubt surrounding Douglas leading into the Olympics. People were worried about her consistency, specifically on beam. She has proven herself as near flawless during the first two days of competition and just can't lose that sense of focus if she wants the gold medal.

She also needs to make sure to keep up that consistency on beam. This is where she can fall behind the other gymnasts, like China's Deng Linlin who has strength and experience on the apparatus.

Raisman and Douglas also need to keep in mind the underdog gymnasts who may soar out of nowhere, like Vanessa Ferrari of Italy who had a phenomenal performance at qualifying. Her sudden burst of success may just be enough to push her to the podium.

Some may even say that Raisman came out of nowhere, as nobody expected her to make the all-around finals. People are asking a lot of questions and wondering if she will be able to do just as well again. Rasiman showed she had the potential during the team competition, but I’m unsure how well she will perform under the pressure of the all-around final.

Uneven bars are her weakness, and she probably won’t do any better than she did in qualifying where she scored a 14.166. This is where Douglas and even China’s Huang Quishang can edge her out.

What is specifically key for the success of Raisman and Douglas is that they put the success of team finals behind them. Even though it was a glorious success for Team USA, all the other gymnasts are going to be acting like Tuesday never happened.
