Ye Shiwen: Chinese Star's Time Should Be Heralded, Not Questioned

Jun 7, 2018

Saturday was one of the wildest days in the 2012 Olympic swimming competition, as Chinese women’s swimming star Ye Shiwen dominated the 400-meter individual medley with a world-record time of 4:28:43 and a gold medal.

The kicker: Shiwen is just 16 years old.

While this should be a time of great celebration for the young star, many people have openly questioned whether or not the Chinese star had been doping. With no evidence to back up the accusations, the Olympic Committee doesn’t feel an investigation is warranted.

That hasn’t stopped other swimmers from commenting on the situation.

French Olympian Alain Bernard told CBS Sports about the allegations and what he hopes the IOC is doing about it:

"

I'm for clean sport, without doping, and I truly hope the authorities in charge of this are doing their job in good conscience and really well. Unfortunately, I want to say that there is no smoke without fire. But today there is no proof to show that any Chinese has tested positive in this competition.

"

While there was a problem in the early 1990s with China doping their swimmers, there is no legitimate evidence of something awry besides the dominant way in which Shiwen set the world record and took gold in the women’s 400m individual medley.

The IOC has a rigorous drug-testing policy that is world-renowned, so the idea that someone is cheating is foolish. They would have caught her; it's that simple.

According to James Kirkup of The Telegraph, the Olympic Committee’s support of Shiwen proves that they have tested the Chinese star and know she is clean. The fact that those around the sport are questioning her performance and the record is more sour grapes than anything substantiated.

To all those doubting the truth behind this still, IOC spokesman Mark Adams summed it up the best:

"Get real!"
