Olympic Results 2012: Ryan Lochte and Biggest American Disappointments of Day 3

Nicholas GossJun 7, 2018

Ryan Lochte was one of the biggest American disappointments on Day 3 of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.

Luckily for Lochte, he has more events to participate in and compete for medals. Other athletes who disappointed on Monday will not get another opportunity to compete for a gold medal until the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil.

Let's look at the three most disappointing American athletes from Day 3 at the Olympics.

Ryan Lochte

After failing to hold the United States' lead in the 4x100-meter relay on Sunday when France's Yannick Agnel was able to catch him in the final leg, Ryan Lochte was beaten by the Frenchman again on Monday in the 200-meter freestyle.

Lochte didn't even get a medal with his fourth-place finish, which was a shocking result since he was expected to at least medal. Agnel took home the gold.

After winning his first gold medal in the 400-meter individual medley on Saturday, Lochte has underperformed in every event since.

After coming into these Olympic Games with so much hype, Lochte needs to bounce back and start winning some medals or he could be labelled as the biggest disappointment in London when the swimming events conclude.

John Orozco

American gymnast John Orozco was a key part of the United States' very disappointing performance in the final of the men's all-around competition on Monday.

Orozco is one of the team's most talented gymnasts, but he wasn't able to carry an American team that made mistakes in each part of the event.

Orozco's performance on the vault was shocking. He was unable to jump high enough off the vault, and as a result, he couldn't prevent himself from falling when his feet landed on the mat.

Rebecca Soni

Soni came into the 100-meter breaststroke on Monday as the favorite. She won the gold medal in the event at the 2011 World Championships, but she was upset by 15-year-old Ruta Meilutyte.

The young Lithuanian star's gold-medal performance was quite impressive, and she was able to keep her lead after the turn despite many of her competitors beginning to gain ground.

Meilutyte is a strong swimmer, but Soni should have taken home the gold because she is more talented and much more experienced. This is an event she does consistently well in, so the result is certainly a disappointing one for her.

A silver medal isn't a terrible result, but it's not what we expected Soni to take home in the 100-meter breaststroke.
