Olympic Results 2012: Breaking Down Early Winners from Day 4

Adam WellsJul 31, 2012

As we move further into the Olympic competition, the results will start to come fast and furious. Day 4 of the Games feels very much like the calm before the storm, with more qualifying heats than medal events.

Even though there is a long way to go on this Tuesday, there have already been some notable events and winners that will have a lasting impact on the way the rest of these Olympics play out.

So as you get ready for a full day of competition, here is a still-early look back at what has happened in London on Day 4.

Men's Basketball: Russia def. China, 73-54

The best thing you can say about China's performance is at least it's over. Russia came out and dominated the Chinese right from the start. That 19-point margin of victory doesn't do justice to how impressive Russia looked.

Russia's size and power was on display, as they outrebounded the Chinese 46-29 en route to a dominant victory.

They won't all be this easy, but it was a brilliant performance for Russia and one that could give them a lot of confidence throughout the preliminary round.

Men's Beach Volleyball: Czech Republic def. China, 2-1, Brazil def. Switzerland, 2-0

In early beach volleyball action, the Czech Republic was able to hold off China and escape with a three-set victory.

Immediately after that, Brazil picked apart Switzerland in two sets (21-17, 21-12). It was a strong showing, as the Brazilians were 21-for-33 on attacks and forced 18 errors from Switzerland en route to victory.

Men's Handball: Iceland def. Tunisia, 32-22

Iceland used an efficient offensive attack to wear down an overmatched Iceland squad in early handball action on Tuesday.

Converting 32 of its 44 shots into goals, Iceland put forth one of the most impressive offensive displays in handball competition thus far.

Even in a losing effort, Tunisia's Amine Bannour was impressive, with 10 goals on 17 shots to keep his team in the match.

The difference in this one came in the first half, when Iceland outscored Tunisia 19-8. They were much more conservative in the second half, but were so far ahead they were never in any danger of losing.
