Olympic Standings 2012: Athletes Who Will Boost USA's Medal Count on Tuesday

Austin GreenJun 5, 2018

The United States is currently tied with China for most medals (17) at the 2012 London Olympic Games, and the Americans will have a great chance to take the lead on Tuesday.

With multiple potential medal winners—including a few contenders for gold—the United States will certainly add to their tally when the day's action kicks off around 3 p.m. EDT.

Look for the following American athletes to boost their country's total by winning a medal on Tuesday.

Michael Phelps

Michael Phelps has had a disappointing Olympic Games thus far. Despite being the greatest swimmer in history, he got crushed by Ryan Lochte in the 400-meter individual medley, then was a part of the men's 4x100-meter freestyle relay team that failed to win gold.

Look for Phelps to get back on track Tuesday when he will be competing in the 200-meter butterfly. He set the world record in this event back in 2009, and after qualifying fourth with a solid time of 1 minute 54.53 seconds, he appears focused and refreshed.

Phelps has struggled thus far, but let's not forget that he is one of the fiercest competitors in Olympic history. Expect him to come out with a vengeance on Tuesday and claim a spot on the podium.

U.S. Women's Gymnastics Team

As massive favorites, the U.S. women's gymnastics is practically guaranteed to medal on Tuesday. If they all perform at or near their best level, they will certainly take home the gold.

McKayla Maroney is the best vaulter in the world, Kyla Ross is an expert at uneven bars and the beam, and Gabby Douglas, Aly Raisman and Jordyn Wieber are phenomenal all-around gymnasts.

As long as they avoid major mistakes and churn out the performances they're capable of, they will win the United States' first women's team gold since 1996.

Missy Franklin

The 17-year-old phenom has lived up to the hype, winning a medal in her first two Olympic events.

First, she helped the women's 4x100-meter freestyle relay team win bronze. Then, she won gold in her first individual event, the 100-meter backstroke. Now she will look to add to her medal count in the 200-meter freestyle.

She will be facing some stiff competition, and this isn't her best event. Still, Franklin is incredibly talented, and if she races to her full potential, she will find herself on the podium once again.
