USA vs Angola Women's Basketball: Grades, Twitter Reaction and Analysis

Ian HanfordJul 30, 2012

Team USA's women's basketball squad earned its second consecutive Olympic victory with a 90-38 win over Angola Monday night.

This wasn't a surprising outcome. Angola lost its tournament opener to Turkey by 20 points, and it doesn't boast much talent to speak of. The United States, on the other hand, defeated Croatia by 25 in its opening-round win.

The American side dominated every facet of this tilt. Four different players reached double-digit scoring, and the defense was stifling throughout the game. Angola didn't have much hope, and that was obvious from the opening tip.

Despite this game's lopsided outcome, there's still plenty to discuss. Let's start with the buzz from the Twitter universe.

Twitter Reaction

American sprinter Allyson Felix had this to say after the game was over:

"

Watched USA Women's bball win big against Angola. Can't wait til it's my turn to get on the track!! #4days

— Allyson Felix (@allysonfelix) July 30, 2012"

This doesn't provide "analysis" about the game itself, but it does show the connection between all Olympic athletes.

ESPN personality Colin Cowherd voiced his opinion on Team USA after the 52-point win:

"

Bron, Kobe, blah, blah ,blah. How bout a shout out for the women. Team USA won a record 6,493rd straight time 2nite. Angola weeps.

— Colin Cowherd (@ESPN_Colin) July 30, 2012"

Cowherd is right. The men's team receives most of the publicity, but the women's team is certainly making a name for itself in London. He also provides us with some comic relief.

ESPN Stats and Info provided us with this interesting tidbit following the action:

"

The USA women's basketball team has won 35 straight at the Olympics. Assists Monday? USA: 25; Angola: 3

— ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) July 30, 2012"

Thirty-five straight victories is truly remarkable. It doesn't matter who you are; it's tough to play mistake-free basketball that often.

Grades

Candace Parker: A+

Parker led the way for the United States on the scoreboard. She turned in 14 points and 12 rebounds, while blocking four shots on the defensive end.

Her efficiency (7-of-10 from the floor) earns her the maximum mark for Monday's effort.

Maya Moore: A

Moore came off the bench, but still managed to stuff the stat sheet. She scored 11 points in 19 minutes on 5-of-8 shooting. She also grabbed five rebounds and dished four assists.

Defensively she had one block and one steal.

Seimone Augustus: A

Augustus scored 13 points in 19 minutes and was one of two American players to knock down a three-point shot. She also snagged three rebounds and had two assists.

Augustus' bench effort, along with others, is exactly what makes Team USA so tough to beat going forward.

Sonia Guadalupe: B+

Guadalupe earns a high mark because she was the lone bright spot in Angola's lineup. She scored 10 points on 4-of-13 shooting. She also hauled down two rebounds.

She deserves any praise given to Angola. She was consistently aggressive despite the obvious disadvantage her team faced.
