Olympic Tennis 2012 Results: Day 2 Scores, Analysis & More

Austin GreenJun 7, 2018

Just like Day 1, the most high-profile man in action stumbled on Sunday.

Luckily, No. 2 Novak Djokovic was able to recover, eventually winning a three-set match over his first-round opponent, just as No. 1 Roger Federer did on Saturday. After dropping the first set to Italian Fabio Fognini, Djokovic prevailed 6-7 (7), 6-2, 6-2.

Unfortunately for women's No. 2 seed Agnieszka Radwanska, she was unable to complete the same feat as Djokovic. Radwanska—who hadn't played since her second-place finish at this year's Wimbledon—was clearly a little rusty, as she fell 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-4 to the powerful Julia Goerges of Germany.

After being broken by Israeli Shahar Peer in the first game, it looked like No. 3 Maria Sharapova could be headed for a similar fate as Radwanska. The Russian quickly put those concerns to rest, though, beating Peer 6-2, 6-0 to advance. It was a strong performance from Sharapova, who was making her Olympic debut.

Also impressive on Sunday was Great Britain's own Andy Murray. The last time he played on Centre Court, Murray was beaten by Roger Federer in the Wimbledon final. This time, he faced another Swiss player, but he didn't have nearly as much trouble with Stanislas Wawrinka, beating him 6-3, 6-3.

Other notable men who advanced were No. 4 David Ferrer, No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and No. 15 Kei Nishikori. On the women's side, no seeded players other than Sharapova advanced because many matches were cancelled due to rain.

The action is scheduled to start again tomorrow, weather permitting, of course. Until then, click here for the complete list of Day 2 results, and here for the full 2012 Olympics tennis brackets.
