Barcelona Transfer News: Club Is Best Served Staying Quiet in Transfer Window
Very often, the rich get richer. But this summer, Barcelona would be wise to to play it safe during the transfer window and actually save some money for once.
It's not as though the team hasn't already added some talent this summer—Jordi Alba is one of the game's bright young stars—but their lavish spending from a year ago shouldn't be matched again this year.
Barca's vice president, Javier Faus, certainly agrees. From Stefan Coerts of Goal.com (via Yahoo! Sports):

"The Blaugrana exceeded their transfer budget in the summer of 2011 following two high-profile arrivals, and Faus has stressed that they cannot afford another summer of big spending.
"
"Last year we surpassed our transfer budget with the signings of Cesc Fabregas and Alexis Sanchez," Faus stated in the end-of-year financial report. "We cannot overspend our budget by €20 or 30 million each year. It would put our business plan at risk. It would not be sustainable.
And honestly, why should Barcelona spend much more money this summer? They already have one of the best—if not the best—rosters in the world. And the addition of Alba is sure to improve them and, oh yeah, they'll be returning David Villa, who missed much of last year due to injury.
Plus, with Fabregas and Sanchez having a full year under their belts for the Catalans, this is a truly stacked team.
Barcelona is arguably the only team in the world that has three—Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta—of the top 10 players in the world. And that Messi guy might be the best ever.
But the one thing that could be Barca's undoing is future financial concerns. The club has significant debt, and continuing to spend willy-nilly will eventually come back to haunt the side.
The best thing Barcelona can do is take it easy on the summer signings, return the team's core which will surely be hungry for success after failing to win the La Liga title and coming up short in the Champions League and allowing the squad to compete at the highest level as is.
You should always try to improve, but Barca doesn't have any glaring weaknesses. They already have an all-star team compiled. At some point, their additions are just going to be greedy.
2012 should be the summer of temperance. And after that, who knows?
Maybe they can go after Neymar next summer...
