Olympic Basketball 2012: Blowout of Spain Proves Team USA's Superiority
Spain gave Team USA all they could handle early on in their exhibition on Tuesday, but ultimately the Americans proved who the best team in the world is.
Spain tried to attack Team USA's biggest weakness, which is on the inside, and they had early success. Serge Ibaka specifically had a solid first quarter.
But in the end the versatility and overall talent gap took over.
Team USA trailed 22-13 in the first quarter, and some fans may panic when the team falls behind.
But we must realize that the days of complete domination in the Olympics are over for Team USA. Against countries like Spain, Brazil and Argentina, the Americans will have to bring their A game.
The thing is, when that happens blowouts like the 100-78 shellacking on Tuesday occur.
A different player seemingly steps up every game for Team USA. The number of players that can carry this team to victory is astounding.
With LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant, the Americans have four players who can take over for pivotal stretches. It's an attack that is almost impossible for any country to defend, especially down the stretch of ball games.
In this game it was Anthony exploding for 27 points, and keying Team USA's run to take and maintain the lead.
The other key factor in Team USA's advantage is their defense. When they need to they can absolutely suffocate a team. Team USA opponents are averaging just under 73 points per game in the exhibitions, and they are shooting just under 43 percent from the field.
The pressure puts them in transition, and no other country can compete in that game.
Will they be pushed in London? Yes, but they will not lose a game.
