Olympic Swimming Schedule 2012: Most Unpredictable Races in London
In competitive swimming, it oftentimes comes down to split seconds.
In the 2012 London Olympics, there are several swimming events that are up for grabs, from the individual races to the team relays.
As the world's greatest swimmers get set for London, here's a look at what should be the most harrowing events.
Watch out for Ryan Lochte, Michael Phelps.
Men's 200- and 400-Meter Individual Medleys
It's no secret that the headliners in this event are Americans Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte.
On one hand, Phelps has captured an Olympic-record 14 gold medals and is considered one of the greatest swimmers of all-time.
On the other hand, Lochte just beat out Phelps in the Olympic trials and he holds the world record in the 200-meter individual medley.
Lochte is hungry, but he doesn't have the experience in the Olympics that Phelps has. Were the Olympic trials against Phelps a fluke or is Lochte ready to shock the world?
Men's 4x100 Freestyle
Australia, led by James Magnussen and James Roberts, is a strong team this year, but don't count out the Americans.
After all, the U.S. men stunned heavily favored France in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and the team will include Phelps once again in this year's Olympics.
Will the U.S. capture its second straight gold medal in the event this year, or is Australia too strong?
Women's 400 Freestyle
Take your pick: this event could be won by defending Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington, Camille Muffat, Allison Schmitt or defending world champion Federica Pellegrini of Italy.
Pellegrini actually isn't favored this year, with the ninth-fastest time in the world in 2012, and she has a history of anxiety attacks before her races.
Muffat, a favorite for many, has the event's fastest time in the world this year, but Adlington has the second-fastest time and won in Beijing in 2008.
On top of that, Schmitt holds 2012's third-fastest time and has been steadily improving.
