Why AJ Lee's Reign as RAW GM Won't Last Long
WWE Raw's 1000th episode is in the books and what a night it was.
From a D-Generation X reunion to The Rock declaring he will challenge whoever is the WWE Champion at the Royal Rumble and so much more. However, there is one glaring storyline that is being vastly overlooked at this point and that is AJ Lee has been named the new general manager of Raw.
Don't be too surprised to see this end in a hurry.
Numerous options have been exhausted over the years in terms of general managers. Everything from a laptop computer run by a midget leprechaun to Triple H himself running the show have been used. Now, with AJ at the helm, things will be dramatically different.
Or will they?
The idea of having AJ—the company's most recognizable diva at this point in time—running the show sounds intriguing. Yet there are a number of reasons as to why she won't last long with this powerful role.
Let's take a look at a few of those reasons, shall we?
Nobody Has Lasted Long in the Last Year
1 of 4Over the last calendar year alone, we have seen four to five different people running Raw and Smackdown. Teddy Long was primarily SmackDown, but Triple H, Hornswoggle—we guess, based on revelations from a few weeks ago—Vince McMahon and John Laurinaitis have all had their chances in running the flagship show. Not to mention all of the guest general managers since Johnny's termination to search for a replacement. The list could go on and on.
If the past year in any indication, AJ won't be around very long.
AJ may appear to be the best option for the position right now, but it won't last. She's hot in terms of appeal and has become the biggest diva in the company. Yes, she is even more popular than the Diva's Champion Layla. In terms of exposure, AJ seems the most logical option for Raw's general manager.
However, the same can be said for Johnny and Triple H and look how those turned out. It's a fun story to have AJ as the general manager right now, but all stories must come to an end.
This one may come to an end sooner than you may think.
Another important factor is that, especially in the case of Johnny, the WWE "board of directors" had the most power for all stories. Needless to say, the general manager rarely has as much control as people might think. Don't expect that to change now that a woman is leading the pack.
She Is More Vital to the Divas Division
2 of 4Believe it or not—actually, everybody believes it—the Divas division is utterly dead. Layla won the Championship back at Extreme Rules and has defended it against Beth Phoenix, successfully, on two separate occasions.
Beth is now, seemingly, out of the picture for the title, leaving Layla to sit around and wait for her next opponent.
How long will she have to wait?
At the current rate of build for the division, the Divas Championship could be around Layla's slender waist until next year. While that may seem like an extreme exaggeration, it could very well happen.
Over the past few months, with her love triangle between Daniel Bryan and CM Punk, AJ was placed in multiple mixed-tag team matches. During those bouts, she put her wrestling ability on display. In these matches, AJ was superb, even if the amount of wrestling time for her was low.
We can also go back to her days in NXT and witness some solid female wrestling from the nerdy school-girl.
Personally, I felt those mixed-tag matches were her "tune up" matches before she was given the green light to "main event" the division for the championship. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear as if my mindset was correct. Not yet, anyway.
AJ needs to be involved with diva wrestling more than she needs another side project. She's in the WWE to wrestle, let her wrestle.
Her Popularity Will Decrease in a Hurry
3 of 4Internet fans absolutely adore AJ Lee. She's got the spunky, wiry personality that "nerds" love and a body that kills. Sure, she may look like she could be underage, but that doesn't matter nowadays.
Regardless, AJ's popularity has elevated to new heights ever since she started associating herself with Bryan. Then she became everybody's favorite stalker, lurking in the dark shadows, watching Bryan in the backstage area. Her association with Punk brought her even higher up the ladder of popularity as she was being involved with the most over superstar on the roster.
Her involvement with Punk and Bryan climbed even higher throughout their feud as each one of them was vying for her affection. Even Kane got involved. Overall, AJ reached a level of popularity simply by being the apple of three different mens' eyes.
In the end, now that her involvement with all three is over, her AJ's popularity will soon fade away. She will be able to hold onto for a while, but it will go away sooner or later.
Everybody's popularity fades. The "cool kids" in high school all find that out the hard way eventually, and so will AJ.
It's Better for Her If It's Short Term
4 of 4What do all of these points lead up to? AJ is better off having this gig last a short amount of time as opposed to an extended one.
As stated earlier, AJ is in the WWE to wrestle, not be an administrator. She will eventually need to be given a spot in the Divas division not just for her career, but for the division as a whole.
However, she will not be taken seriously as a competitor if she remains the general manager for longer than a couple of months. She will have been out of action for too long and defeat the purpose of her being a WWE Diva. Being and administrator is how you lose the interest of fans, not gain it.
Generally speaking—unless you already have a strong following from the fans—once you put on the suit, they give you the boot.
AJ Lee is better off not having the general manager label. Now that she has it, we will just have to wait until she is inevitably removed from said label.
AJ Lee as Raw general manager won't last long. Unlike John Cena's WWE Championship match last night, you can cash that in and be successful
