WWE Raw 1000: How John Cena Failing to Cash in Money in the Bank Could Help Him

The Doctor Chris MuellerJun 5, 2018

The epic episode 1000 of Raw is right around the corner and as we found out on Raw 999, we are going to see John Cena cash in his briefcase against CM Punk in the first pre-annuonced MITB cash-in since Rob Van Dam.

The Money in the Bank briefcase has never yielded a winner who did not go on to cash in successfully unless you count Mr. Kennedy, who lost his case to Edge in a match on Raw.

With John Cena being the poster boy of WWE, many would think it is already set in stone that he will successfully cash in, but being the first person to fail at cashing in could actually benefit Cena more than winning.

This report from PWInsider (link may contain malware, h/t TWNP News) certainly seems to indicate that Cena losing is a possibility.

"

WWE’s creative committee is rumored to be leaning toward CM Punk retaining the WWE Championship next Monday on Raw SuperShow when John Cena cashes in his Money in the Bank contract. According to PWInsider.com, there is a lot of talk within the organization that Cena will be the first person to not win a title directly after cashing in the briefcase.John Cena is a 12 time WWE and World champion, so adding one more win to the long list would not do much for the man who has done just about everything there is to do in the company.

"

Having him fail at cashing in his briefcase could do more good for Cena than most might think. For one, it would take Cena down a much needed peg.

He is not called Super Cena because he resembles George Reeves or Christopher Reeve (no relation, R.I.P.) but it is because he is known for coming back and winning against all odds nearly every time he steps in the ring and is portrayed as the underdog.

Cena needs a big-time loss to put his character back in perspective in the fans' eyes, and losing at cashing in his case could do the trick. Obviously, losing to The Rock did not accomplish this.

Not only would it finally make Cena look like he can actually lose when something big is on the line, but it would also possibly make him look sympathetic in some fans' eyes.

For him to be the first person to fail at cashing in is certainly not going to bring a whole lot of sympathy from the IWC, but the rest of the WWE audience may feel for the guy.

Another reason the loss would possibly help him is that it could finally give him a reason to lose his cool and act more like the monster he should be acting like.

When you are as ridiculously strong as Cena, you should be using that power to make everyone else around you look weak and Cena does not do that.

What some fans want to see is a Cena who loses control and punishes everyone in the ring with him, much like Lesnar or Batista would do when they were still full-time WWE wrestlers.

I wrote a piece about whether or not Cena could even be a good heel and how it would need to be a very slow process. Well, having him lose at cashing in his case would certainly be a good start.

We will have to wait until Monday to see exactly how WWE plans to move forward with Cena and his briefcase, but one thing is for sure, him winning is nowhere near definite yet.

What do you think—Would losing to Punk and being the first person to fail at cashing in MITB help or hurt Cena?
