WWE Money in the Bank 2012: Sheamus and Superstars Who Gained Nothing from Wins

Mike ChiariJun 7, 2018

While a victory on an important pay-per-view is often supposed to launch a superstar to bigger and better things, that isn't always the case.

Based on the way things are booked, a win can often mean very little.

While Dolph Ziggler winning the Money in the Bank ladder match on Sunday is an example of an important win, there weren't many others at Money in the Bank. The main culprit for that would have to be the lack of build. There were only four matches on the entire card that anyone cared even slightly about, so that obviously contributed to the issue.

Perhaps things can be rectified at SummerSlam, but there is no doubt that more attention could have been given to certain matches at Money in the Bank.

Here are three superstars who were triumphant at Money in the Bank, but didn't really gain anything tangible from it.

Sheamus

Since turning face about a year ago, Sheamus has been one the WWE's most dominant forces. It's tough to remember him losing many singles matches over the course of the last 12 months, and that is especially true since he won the Royal Rumble.

Sheamus has been on an absolute roll since January and even managed to beat Daniel Bryan for the world heavyweight championship in just 18 seconds at WrestleMania.

It seems like the creative team is at a loss with regards to who he should feud with, though, and that resulted in a meaningless rivalry with Alberto Del Rio.

Very little time was put into building the match, and while Del Rio got the best of Sheamus twice heading into the pay-per-view, I never thought of him as a true threat to beat Sheamus.

The two combatants had a solid match with Del Rio dictating much of the offense, but Sheamus ultimately came through and picked up the win.

It was nice to see Sheamus keep the belt as expected, but he didn't advance because of it.

It may be difficult to fathom a Money in the Bank ladder match win not meaning much for somebody, but if there is one guy who doesn't need to win that match, it's John Cena.

The WWE decided to have a WWE championship contract ladder match involving only former WWE champions in Cena, Big Show, Kane, Chris Jericho and The Miz.

Truth be told, the only guy that would have benefited from a win in a big way would have been Miz. He had just returned that night, though, so it was clear that the odds were stacked against him.

As soon as Cena announced that he would be in the match, you could tell that he would come away with the briefcase. That is precisely what happened, and it will set up a match against CM Punk for the WWE championship on the 1,000th episode of Raw.

While I'm sure that match will be fantastic and it will create some memorable moments, Cena winning Money in the Bank didn't matter. He is a 10-time WWE champion, and although he has been away from the belt for several months, nothing has changed as far as Cena's character is concerned.

Ryback

Ryback had yet another formulaic squash match on Sunday as he defeated the team of Curt Hawkins and Tyler Reks. Ryback had beaten them each individually in the weeks leading up to the pay-per-view, so it was a dead giveaway that he would face both at Money in the Bank.

Hawkins and Reks were allowed to get a bit of offense in, but it wasn't as if Ryback was in any danger of losing. He won the match as he always does, but fans are getting tired of seeing him beat local enhancement talent and other jobbers.

Ryback needs a true feud and he won't be able to get over completely until he has one. Perhaps that is on the horizon as he and Jack Swagger had a bit of a run in on Raw. Swagger attacked Ryback before their match even started and had Ryback on the ropes. Ryback fought back an vanquished Swagger, although there was never an official match.

If that turns into something, then perhaps Ryback can become relevant, but beating guys who are rarely ever seen on television isn't going to impress anyone.
