NBA Free Agency 2012: Breaking Down Best Fits for Underrated Players
As the NBA free agent frenzy starts to wind down, with most of the top players having made their decision or very close to making one, there are still plenty of names out there worth keeping an eye on.
Unlike the other major sports, the NBA is such a top-heavy league that bench players and sixth men off the bench don't get the glory that they deserve. We saw in the NBA Finals how important depth is, as Shane Battier and Mike Miller were just as instrumental in Miami's triumph as LeBron James.
Here is a look at some of the better players left on the free agent market and where their best fit will be.
Kris Humphries, PF
Once you ignore his personal life and pay attention to what he did on the court, Humphries is turning into a capable big man in the NBA. He had career highs in minutes (34.9), points (13.8) and rebounds (11.0) per game.
Despite his success, Humphries is still sitting on the market for anyone to grab. According to Marc Stein of ESPN, the Nets and Bobcats are battling to land the power forward's services.
"Numbers circulating in Kris Humphries' bidding war: Word is Nets offering three-year deal worth $24 mil; Bobcats offering three years, $22M
— Marc Stein (@ESPNSteinLine) July 12, 2012"
The Bobcats are a franchise on the rise, but they have a long way to go. The Nets are closer to competing in the Eastern Conference, and Humphries really found himself there last year. Why ruin a good thing before it really gets going?
Best Fit: New Jersey
Nate Robinson, PG
Everyone's favorite small point guard, Robinson finds himself without a lot of suitors right now. Despite being an explosive ball handler and exciting dunker, the limitations to his game don't make him an ideal fit in a lot of places.
If Robinson can reel in his ego long enough to convince teams that he can play ball with them, there are a lot of teams that need a point guard to come off the bench.
A team like Chicago, which needs a lot of scoring help and will be without Derrick Rose for at least the first two months of the season, should take a look at Robinson as a stop-gap.
Best Fit: Chicago
Grant Hill, SF
He might be well past his prime and incapable of playing any kind of defense, but there is something about Grant Hill that is fascinating to watch. Perhaps it is the number of times we all assumed his career was over due to injuries and the way he kept battling back.
It seems like everyone is after Hill right now because he is still a very good shooter and can give a team 10-15 points off the bench, as well as bringing a strong presence in the locker room if you believe in that sort of thing.
Considering the success that Hill had playing alongside Nash, I have to think the Lakers are going to be as enticing as any team making a push for him.
Best Fit: Los Angeles Lakers
