Individual Women's Gymnastic Team Members: Ranking Each Members' Best Event

Alessandro MiglioJun 7, 2018

The U.S. Olympic gymnastics team heads to London as a favorite to win the gold medal. After all, they won gold at the 2011 World Championships, despite the last-minute loss of Alicia Sacramone to injury and a weakness in the uneven bars.

Which event is each woman's strongest? Click through to find out.

Jordyn Wieber

1 of 5

The all-around world champion is strong in every event, naturally, but which one is her best?

She has developed an excellent floor routine over the years. She is also great on the beam and solid on the uneven bars. Her strongest event, however, is the vault.

Wieber has averaged a whopping 15.81 points in this event over the past two years. She and McKayla Maroney give the U.S. gymnastics team an incredible advantage in this event for the team competition, and she could have challenged her teammate for individual gold had she participated in the event finals at the World Championships last year.

Aly Raisman

Growing up, the 18-year-old gymnast from Massachusetts idolized Alicia Sacramone, who "calls her mini-me." Raisman's fantastic beam work is a reflection of that.

Where she stands out for Team USA, however, is on the floor exercise. That opening floor pass has an incredible degree of difficulty, and she does not let up.

Despite some strong performances by the likes of Mary Lout Retton, Julianne McNamerra, Shannon Miller and Shawn Johnson over the past 30 years, no American woman has ever won a gold medal in this event at the Olympics.

Raisman might not be a favorite this summer, but she won a bronze medal in the event at the 2011 World Championships. She will likely lead a strong trio, including Wieber and Gabby Douglas, for the team competition in this event.

Gabby Douglas

3 of 5

Gaby Douglas has evolved into another all-around force for the U.S. women's gymnastics team. She is excellent in three events—her balance beam leaves something to be desired—but there is one event where she sticks out: uneven bars.

Douglas has worked hard over the past two years, finally clawing past all-around favorite Wieber at the U.S. trials. The biggest reason for her ascent has been a big improvement on the bars.

The rising star placed fifth at the 2011 World Championships in this event with an overall score of 14.200. This year, she won the event at the U.S. Visa Championships with an eye-popping score of 15.850. She one-upped herself by cracking 16 at the trials.

To put that in perspective, world champion Victoria Komova of Russia won the event in 2011 with a score of 15.500.

This emergence comes at a critical time for Team USA. Their weakness in the team competition to this point was on the uneven bars.

With Gabby Douglas, that is no longer the case.

McKayla Maroney

4 of 5

McKayla Maroney was brought to London to do one thing: vault.

Despite Mary Lou Retton's perfect 10 at the 1984 Games, no American woman has ever won a gold medal in this event. Retton wound up with a silver medal en route to America's first ever all-around gold, finishing just behind Romania's Ekaterina Szabó. Annia Hatch is the only other American to even medal in the event, also scoring silver at the 2004 Games.

Maroney aims to change that.

The vault specialist is the reigning world champion in this event. She is not nearly as strong in the other events, but she will likely not need to participate in any of them—she was the third participant in the floor exercise at last year's world championships, but Douglas will likely replace her there.

Kyla Ross

5 of 5

If Maroney was brought to vault, Ross was brought to fly. Well, she will also likely have a chance on the beam.

The youngest member of the U.S. Olympic squad is a solid all-around gymnast, but her best event by far is the uneven bars. Her score of 15.350 on the event at the trials would have been good for silver at the 2011 world championships.

Once a weak event for Team USA, the uneven bars are shaping up to be a strong one with Douglas and Ross leading the charge.
