WWE Money in the Bank 2012: Why John Cena Needs the WWE Title
After seeing John Cena headline a pay-per-view event for the sixth straight month, it is time for the WWE to put the championship back on its top star right away.
Money In the Bank could have been the night that CM Punk and the WWE championship were contested in a pay-per-view main event for the first time since December's TLC show. There was not a lot of hype surrounding the ladder match involving Cena, Kane, Chris Jericho and Big Show, and everyone knew what Punk and Bryan were capable of in a singles match.
The addition of A.J. to the WWE Championship Match undoubtedly hurt its appeal, despite the WWE's "best" efforts to push her like she is a star and making her decision to side with someone more important than the belt itself.

But when Cena was able to knock Big Show off the ladder while simultaneously grabbing the briefcase, there was a great sense of relief that came over the entire WWE. Whether you like Cena or not, the fact of the matter is that the WWE is always going to push him as the biggest star, and he will headline every show for as long as he is a part of the company.
As much as I wanted to give Punk the benefit of the doubt as champion and hope that he could somehow bring legitimacy back to the belt, unless people see it as a big deal and it is being fought over in main events, there is no chance that it is going to mean anything.
Putting the belt back on Cena, possibly as soon as SummerSlam, will be a good thing for the WWE. The company needs to start putting an emphasis on making the title mean something again. There should be nothing more important to the company than that belt.
Punk was never going to be given a real shot to make the title feel special because he isn't a Vince McMahon guy. Sure, Punk was going to get some semblance of a push, but that is more due to current circumstances than a desire on WWE's part to see him succeed.
Giving Cena the title and having it fought over in main events is the only thing that makes sense for the company. There are a lot more problems that would have to be fixed along the way, although showcasing the title in the closing match of the show and making it feel like a big deal is the first step on the road to recovery.
Like it or not, Cena being champion again is the only thing that makes sense for WWE at this point in time.
