UFC 149 Fight Card: Looking Back at Every Injury
According to Dana White, UFC 149 is the most injury-riddled card in UFC history.
There have been changes in all five main card fights, with a total of ten changes to the overall event.
UFC 149 may not have the same firepower as when the card was first being put together. But with the fan favorite Urijah Faber and seemingly unbeatable Renan Barao in the main event, you still can't miss this event.
As a warm-up to the event, let's take a look back at the many changes to the UFC 149 lineup.
George Roop Injured; Antonio Carvalho Set to Face Daniel Pineda
1 of 10On June 26th, George Roop was forced out of his bout with Antonio Carvalho due to a training injury. He was replaced soon after with Daniel Pineda.
Roop was entering the fight coming off of back-to-back losses, so Roop was likely fighting for his job. That question will have to wait for now.
Bibiano Fernandes Signs with One FC; Roland Delorme Set to Face Francisco Rivera
2 of 10At first, it was announced that newly signed UFC bantamweight Bibiano Fernandes was injured and forced to pull out of his UFC 149 bout against Roland Delorme.
Soon after, it was announced that Fernandes was in negotiations with the UFC, but never signed a contract. Shortly thereafter, he inked a deal with One FC.
Roland Delorme will now face Francisco Rivera during the prelims of UFC 149.
Claude Patrick Injured; James Head Set to Face Brian Ebersole
3 of 10One of the most recent changes to the card was when Claude Patrick was forced to pull out of his bout with James Head due to injury.
Now, Head will get set to face Brian Ebersole, who just fought at UFC on Fuel 4 on June 22nd and picked up a unanimous decision win over submission specialist T.J. Waldburger.
Yoshihiro Akiyama Injured; Thiago Alves Set to Face Siyar Bahadurzada
4 of 10I'm not 100 percent sure, but if I had one guess, I'd say this is more than likely the injury-adjusted fight in UFC history.
Originally, the bout was set to feature Yoshihiro Akiyama up against former welterweight title contender Thiago Alves.
On May 8th, it was announced that Akiyama was injured and replaced by Siyar Bahadurzada.
Thiago Alves Injured; Siyar Bahadurzada Set to Face Chris Clements
5 of 10Less than a month later, Thiago Alves was injured.
The bout was once against changed. At that time, the newly scheduled fight was Siyar Bahadurzada against Chris Clements.
Siyar Bahadurzada Injured; Chris Clements Set to Face Matthew Riddle
6 of 10At the end of June, the fight was forced to go through yet another change.
It was announced that Bahadurzada was now injured as well and will be replaced by Matthew Riddle.
As of today, the bout will be Chris Clements against Riddle and will serve as the pay-per-view opener.
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira Injured; Cheick Kongo Set to Face Shawn Jordan
7 of 10Big Nog was set to make his return from his gruesome arm injury he suffered against Frank Mir. His arm is not yet fully healed, and he was forced to pull out of UFC 149.
Cheick Kongo will now face Shawn Jordan on the main card on pay-per-view.
Michael Bisping Injured; Lombard Pulled from UFC on Fox to Face Tim Boetsch
8 of 10The middleweight division is as crowded at the top as it has ever been.
Things were set get cleared up this summer, but then Michael Bisping went down with an injury and had to be pulled from his match-up with Tim Boetsch.
Newly-signed UFC middleweight Hector Lombard was set to face Brian Stann at UFC on Fox later in August. When Stann went down with injury close to the same time as Bisping's injury, the UFC decided to move Lombard to the 149 card and match-up him up with Boetsch.
Thiago Silva Injured; Shogun Moved to Fight at UFC on Fox 4
9 of 10While the Lombard vs. Boetsch match-up was being arranged, another injury occurred.
Mauricio Rua was scheduled to battle Thiago Silva at UFC 149, but Silva was forced to pull out with an injury.
With the originally planned UFC on Fox main event falling through with Brian Stann's injury, Shogun Rua was pulled from the 149 card and is now set to face Brandon Vera in the main event at UFC on Fox 4 scheduled for August 4th.
Jose Aldo Injured; Fight with Koch Postponed
10 of 10The scheduled main event for UFC 149 was set to feature UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo taking on the young, up-and-comer Erik Koch.
On June 9th, the card took a major hit when it was announced that Jose Aldo was forced to pull out of the title match and UFC 149 due to injury.
The UFC went on to announce that the new main event would be the Interim Bantamweight Championship bout between Urijah Faber and Renan Barao that was originally scheduled to go down as the co-main event at UFC 148.
