Real Madrid Transfers: Why Luka Modric Would Thrive at the Bernabeu
With Luka Modric looking increasingly likely to join Real Madrid this summer, there should be no doubt that the current Tottenham midfielder will thrive on one of the world's biggest stages at the Bernabeu.
Many should be hopeful, especially Tottenham fans, that this prolonged transfer saga may finally come to a conclusion. On the other end, Real Madrid will strengthen their side and make another aggressive charge for the La Liga title.
The introduction of Luka Modric has, naturally, been questioned: Why does Real Madrid need to part with an excessive transfer fee for a player that may be of greater service to another club? Modric's talent is undeniable, but what must he bring to the table to be considered a success?

Modric's numbers in assists and goals over the past few seasons have been unimpressive, a statement made more powerful by the growing status of the Croatia international. Yes, he's one of the leading midfielders in England, but the huge leap to the Bernabeu and into Real Madrid's squad should greatly enhance those numbers.
Tottenham's continuous failure to take all their chances in front of goal are obviously a factor; the club was hardly considered prolific in the striking department last season. And even though Jermain Defoe has displayed excellent qualities around the box, he simply has not been given the necessary regular starts to supplement the creators in the Tottenham midfield.
At Real Madrid, however, Modric is faced with the prospect of playing with Europe's most lethal attack. Combining for well over 100 goals last season, Madrid's forwards are not shy in front of goal. Cristiano Ronaldo, especially, possesses the necessary consistency to highlight Modric's ability.
The likelihood of rotation in the attacking department at Madrid will not greatly effect players like Modric. Instead it will allow him, as playmaker, to look like he serves a continued purpose in the team. Jose Mourinho can change his strikers freely with the knowledge that the end result in front of goal will be the same.
It's also worth looking at the great increase in quality all over the pitch Modric will be working with. Yes, the Tottenham midfielders are talented, but Modric should feel at home in a midfield consisting of excellent technical players such as Xabi Alonso and Mesut Ozil.
There's no harm in thinking that Modric's stock could rise even higher once he settles at Madrid and becomes an integral part of the machine.
The big elephant in the room is the lack of playing time issue. But won't that only increase the midfielder's productivity over the course of the season?
The big problem for Madrid last season was their lack of rotation in key games as the season came to a close. The feeling was that Mourinho couldn't place equal faith in those considered backup or squad players, and that it was important for the team to remain at peak ability.
Naturally, that led to the sacrifice of consistency and greater fatigue.
With Modric coming in reeling off the back of a good outing at this summer's Euros, there can be a lot more faith in certain squad members. Modric has shown he is capable of playing a number of roles in the midfield, and while his productivity may waver in particular areas of the pitch, his value will remain a constant.
There's no point suggesting that Modric was feeding off scraps in the Tottenham team, as that club managed to assemble an impressive first XI last season. But the jump to Madrid will be noticeable for the player and his new club.
Modric is an excellent pickup due to his ability to dictate play and keep the ball moving. But again, his numbers are a concern. The positive is that a transfer to Madrid can only bring the best out of a player who has longed for a move to the head table of world football.
