WWE: The WWE Titles Most Likely to Fall to a Heel

Voodoo MagicJul 15, 2012

Fun fact: Did you know that every single title in WWE is currently held by a babyface?

WWE's product has become a bit stale and is desperately in need of an injection of something interesting and original. Part of this has to be due to the fact that ever since Christian beat Cody Rhodes for the Intercontinental Title and Layla won the Divas Title, each and every title in WWE is currently being held by a babyface performer.

In order for business to pick up, that has to change. With Money in the Bank upon us, it's likely that it might all change very soon, but my question is this: Which of WWE's titles is going to be the first to change hands and be held by a heel?

Well, let's take a look...

#6: The Intercontinental Title

I feel that, of all of WWE's titles, the IC belt is the least likely to go heel soon.

First of all, Christian is a quality champion and has recently had a very good feud with Cody Rhodes. One would think that maybe Rhodes wants the title back, but his time has come and gone for two reasons. First, storyline-wise, he has lost his rematches and is pretty much out of chances to win the title back. Second, backstage-wise, Rhodes has improved to the point that he's pretty much ready to move to the main event (or at least the upper-midcard).

Also, we know that WWE has not exactly been interested in really building up the midcard titles in recent years; the reason that the IC belt is less likely to change hands is because Christian has held his title for less time than Santino, who has held (and tarnished) the belt long enough and is due to drop it at some point soon.

Hey now, I hear your protests: it's Money in the Bank season! This is exactly the time when the major titles change hands!

Well, yes, it is. But remember, this is about the titles that are most likely to go to a heel, not the ones most likely to change.

It seems like almost a foregone conclusion at this point that John Cena is walking away with the WWE Title Briefcase, which will more than likely be cashed in at some point between now and SummerSlam. Remember, though, Cena is a babyface. Cena-Punk is likely going to be the major feud at SummerSlam, and it's likely that both will remain babyfaces (though Punk will hopefully regain some of the anti-hero/tweener mentality he had this time last year).

And yes, that means that I really don't see Daniel Bryan winning the title in his match with Punk. It'll be a great match (unless too much attention is paid to AJ), but Bryan is going to come up short once again.

#4: The United States Title

WWE has left the title on Santino long enough; there are plenty of other younger guys who could (and should) step up and take it off of him.

The only problem with this scenario, and the reason this entry isn't ranked higher, is because WWE hasn't really shown much initiative in terms of getting the belt off of Santino. Let's face it, Marella is overrated as a babyface performer, and he'll bring in the fans as long as he's featured.

However, with his recent semi-feud with Alberto Del Rio and Ricardo Rodriguez, I could almost see Del Rio—if he fails at defeating Sheamus—taking his frustrations out on Santino and winning the belt. Also, Jack Swagger needs something to do with his time (as does Tensai, who is slowly becoming another possibility for either AW's stable or for Vickie's crew), and could take the belt too.

#3: The World Heavyweight Title

Smackdown's #1 fella comes in next at #3. The main reason he's the most likely of the main event performers to lose his title to a heel—even more than CM Punk—is because of the fairly noticeable momentum behind both Dolph Ziggler and, to some degree, Alberto Del Rio.

Ziggler is more than likely going to win the MITB briefcase tonight, though I don't think he'll cash it in any point really soon (though you never know). Also, given the recent stories that have broken online, Del Rio is in line for more of a push this year and has been getting more aggressive in the ring.

While I like Sheamus—I don't think he's Cena 2.0 if only because he's a quality in-ring performer and he's booked much better—I do see him being the next main guy to drop the belt, even if he did just win it recently, simply because he has two quality heel challengers gunning for him.

#2: The Tag Team Titles

5 of 6

I know it might seem like the tag titles are in the same boat as the two midcard titles, but the fact is that Kofi & Truth have been holding onto the titles for quite a while and there are some quality heel contenders to the title at this point: The Prime Time Players, Hunico & Camacho, and, if you want to be optimistic, then maybe The Ascension will be coming up from NXT at some point soon as well.

Kofi & Truth are excellent in the ring, but it's time for both to do something else with their careers, specifically the wildly underutilized and underappreciated Kingston (not to mention Truth, who needs to go back to his heel persona).

Besides, if the rumor mill is to be believed, Triple H wants to rebuild the tag team division; what better way to do that than to have lots of teams compete for the titles and have it change hands in quality matches? I'll believe it when I see it, but I'm being cautiously optimistic.

#1: The Divas Title

The revolution is coming, and Layla is the first one to get overthrown

With quality performers like Sara Del Rey coming into WWE and others like Kharma coming back, the time for the gorgeous models with no in-ring talent is running out; they either need to learn to perform or follow in the paths of people like the Bellas.

Now, I'm not saying that Layla is terrible or anything. She's decent in the ring and is a decent talker, but the fans have not connected with her as a face. With Kharma's return (hopefully) imminent, and the debuts of the Sara Del Rey's and Buggy Nova's of the world to come (hopefully) soon after, it's very likely that at some point very soon Beth Phoenix is going to win back the title from Layla so that she can feud with Kharma.

Color me intrigued—finally—with the women's division. Just don't screw it up, WWE...
