WWE News: Vince McMahon Claims He Doesn't Think WWE Drove WCW Out of Business

Voodoo MagicJun 7, 2018

As reported on Wrestlezone, Vince McMahon has stated in a recent interview with WWE.com that he does not believe that WWE was the main reason that WCW went out of business:

"

"I don't think we drove WCW out of business. That was certainly never our intent. That was the mindset of Ted Turner and WCW, but not WWE. See, if you spend all of your energy trying to kill the other guy, your product suffers. If you don't kill the other guy, then he's going to come back at you, and when he comes back, you won't have done anything to make your house better. It's no different than being in a fight and knowing that, if the other guy keeps on hitting you, that son of a bitch is going to wear himself out pretty fast."

It's an interesting take on the matter, I think.

To some degree, I think that Vince has a strong point: when you focus all of your energy on trying to attack the other guy, it is very true that (often times) you don't have a lot left over for improving your own product.

WCW was a strong case for this, as so much of what they did in their waning years was meant to mess with WWE, and for the most part—i.e. giving away Foley's title win, having so many worked shoots about the shape WCW was in (Hogan's title win at Bash at the Beach 2000)—it severely hurt their business.

But WWE was guilty of this kind of thing too. DX once invaded a WCW taping; X-Pac's re-debut in 1998 involved a long rant against Eric Bischoff; WWE put on a slew of "Billionaire Ted" skits meant to satirize Ted Turner as well as Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage. The list goes on (for both sides), so Vince is not entirely innocent here.

But he does have a point. To a large degree, once WWE started taking over the lead in the Monday Night Wars, they started focusing more on improving their product and working on their own storylines and stopped talking about WCW for the most part.

WCW never stopped talking about WWE, and it left them wanting for their own quality stories.

Do you agree with Vince, that WCW sowed the seeds of its own demise? Or is he just trying to be humble here (for whatever reason)?
