2012 NBA Free Agents: 10 Worst Contracts of NBA Free Agency So Far

Adam FromalJun 7, 2018

Have you ever had that feeling where you wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat and wonder why you made a specific decision?

After signing these players, the NBA general managers involved certainly have.

These are the 10 worst signings of the free agency period thus far, although more players are certain to be overpaid in the near future.

Read on to find out who they are.

Nick Young: 1 Year, $6 Million

1 of 10

Team: Philadelphia 76ers

Age: 27

Position: SG

2011-2012 Per-Game Stats: 14.2 points, 0.9 assists, 2.1 rebounds

This isn't an expensive contract by any means, and the Philadelphia 76ers made the deal with the intention of filling the void left by Lou Williams.

However, Nick Young doesn't fit in with the Sixers at all. He can put up points, but he's completely adverse to ever passing the ball—a skill necessary on a team without a true superstar.

Tim Duncan: 3 Years, $36 Million

2 of 10

Team: San Antonio Spurs

Age: 36

Position: PF/C

2011-2012 Per-Game Stats: 15.4 points, 9.0 rebounds, 1.5 blocks

Tim Duncan is still a fantastic basketball player, and he should go down as best power forward of all time, but three years is too long for this deal.

I would have been fine with a one-year contract for Duncan to stay with the Spurs, but the signs of a decline are starting to show.

Three years from now, as Duncan hobbles up and down the court at 39 years old, San Antonio will regret making this signing.

Kevin Garnett: 3 Years, $34 Million

3 of 10

Team: Boston Celtics

Age: 36

Position: PF/C

2011-2012 Per-Game Stats: 15.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.0 assists

The same logic that applied to Tim Duncan applies to Kevin Garnett here.

Garnett is still a valuable piece for the Boston Celtics, but will he really be in another three years when he's still being paid over $10 million for one season of action?

This big man plays with so much intensity that it's hard to envision him taking a lesser role, but his body is going to wear down.

Jason Kidd: 3 Years, $9 Million

4 of 10

Team: New York Knicks

Age: 39

Position: PG

2011-2012 Per-Game Stats: 6.2 points, 5.5 assists, 4.1 rebounds

The same argument that applied to Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett earlier also applies to Jason Kidd here. But while the two big men are going to be 39 at the end of their contracts, Kidd is already 39 at the beginning of his.

Money isn't a problem here, but Kidd isn't going to be worth having on the roster after another season or two. While Kidd is a valuable backup right now, his value will steeply decline after a year of mentoring Jeremy Lin.

UPDATES: Kidd was reportedly arrested Sunday for DWI in New York, giving the Knicks a headache they certainly did not need. Additionally, sources report that the Knicks are unlikely to match the Rockets' offer sheet for Lin after the Knicks traded for PG Raymond Felton late Saturday.

Nicolas Batum: 4 Years, $46 Million

5 of 10

Team: Portland Trail Blazers or Minnesota Timberwolves (Batum has signed offer sheet with Minnesota)

Age: 23

Position: SF

2011-2012 Per-Game Stats: 13.9 points, 1.4 assists, 4.6 rebounds

Nicolas Batum could be a star player if he continues to develop, but he has a lot of work to do on his game before he can live up to this massive contract.

Whether he lands with the Timberwolves or Trail Blazers, Batum is getting paid a lot for his potential.

Roy Hibbert: 4 Years, $58 Million

6 of 10

Team: Indiana Pacers

Age: 25

Position: C

2011-2012 Per-Game Stats: 12.8 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.0 blocks

Max contracts are supposed to be handed out to players who can truly carry a team.

Despite his All-Star status and his occasional dominance, Roy Hibbert isn't the kind of guy who can lift a team to a title without several star players by his side. His defensive skills are excellent, but the rest of his game is still developing.

Given the dearth of quality centers, this is an excusable signing, but the Indiana Pacers were still forced into overpaying for the 7'2" former big man by the Portland Trail Blazers

Landry Fields: 3 Years, $20 Million

7 of 10

Team: Toronto Raptors or New York Knicks (Fields has signed offer sheet with Raptors)

Age: 24

Position: SG

2011-2012 Per-Game Stats: 8.8 points, 2.6 assists, 4.2 rebounds

Part of the motivation behind Toronto's offer sheet for Landry Fields was stealing him away so the New York Knicks would have one less piece to offer the Phoenix Suns for Steve Nash.

Clearly, things didn't go according to plan as the Canadian point guard ended up with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Now, either the Raptors or Knicks are going to be stuck paying way too much money for a mediocre shooting guard, and reports have surfaced that the Knicks will give way to the Raptors and let Fields walk.

Brook Lopez: 4 Years, $61 Million

8 of 10

Team: Brooklyn Nets

Age: 24

Position: C

2011-2012 Per-Game Stats: 19.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, 0.8 blocks

Brook Lopez is a true seven-footer with several methods of putting the ball in the basket. Unfortunately, he needs a dictionary to understand what a rebound is, and defense isn't exactly in his vocabulary either.

While his offense is valuable, it is not worth a max contract.

Jeff Green: 4 Years, $36 Million

9 of 10

Team: Boston Celtics

Age: 25

Position: SF/PF

2011-2012 Per-Game Stats: 13.3 points, 1.4 assists, 4.8 rebounds

I promise I'm not trying to pick on the Celtics, but we now have back-to-back entries from the Boston franchise.

One year removed from an aortic aneurysm that sidelined Jeff Green for the entire season, this contract is both too pricy and too lengthy for such a risky player.

This one could go well, but a one or two-year deal would have made for a much safer investment.

Omer Asik: 3 Years, $25 Million

10 of 10

Team: Chicago Bulls or Houston Rockets (Asik has signed offer sheet with Houston)

Age: 26

Position: C

2011-2012 Per-Game Stats: 3.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.0 blocks

A limited player on offense, Omer Asik is still developing on both ends of the court.

He's never been a long-term starter, but he's now going to get paid like one, regardless of where he ends up. Although he may start in Houston, he would likely come off the bench behind Joakim Noah if he returns to the Bulls.

Asik can rebound and block shots, but that's not enough to warrant this much money.
